idk how i feel about that. I never finished the last season of Sherlock but I heard it was a disaster

 

He’s written some of the best episodes of the series. As a showrunner he tries to do too many big, twisty and connected things for better or worse (Matt Smiths first season is incredible, final Sherlock season is a fucking disaster). But him coming back to write an individual episode or two is absolutely a win

 

I know I’m always plugging the Capaldi seasons, but those are moffat’s best work imo. The leanest period of the show story-wise, for the better.

 

yeah the last season of Sherlock, and even s3 I'd argue sucked but I don't think Moffat takes the blame for that. his two standalone episodes those seasons were both great, it's just the general direction all three writers went with all the characters and plot in that show were mind numbingly terrible

he absolutely just gor better with time as DW showrunner. but also almost every standalone episode he's written has been an absolute heater. can't see this being anything but good news personally

 

this is probably good news, moffat writes too clever by half nonsense in either a shitty and annoying way or a very very entertaining way. his highs are high. heaven sent and hoodie capaldi era is peak tv

 

Started watching Torchwood while awaiting new Who. Found a list of episodes to watch/skip and so far that’s been serving me well. There’s a lot of things that have made me think if these are part of the good episodes I can’t imagine what’s in the bad ones. It definitely has the same vibe as a teenager who learned he can say “fuck” when his parents aren’t around.

 

yeah Torchwood is edgy as hell and a lot of it is borderline unwatchable these days, but damn if s3 isn't just one of the best seasons in DW canon

 

Yeah, season 3 is incredible, and it holds up pretty well imo. I've been thinking about watching it myself lately

I also really like season 4 for what it is, even though it definitely has its problems lol

 

I should probably re-watch Season 4 before I judge it too harshly but I just remember it being thuddingly mediocre

Also happy 15th to arguably the most influential episode of NuWho

 

I absolutely hated s4 of Torchwood lmao. all I really remember about it now is the new American guy getting Jack's powers and more than half the season being chasing a red herring. so annoying

 

Season 2 of Torchwood was better but the Owen stuff was really bad and the finale was a huge letdown. Also I’m so sick of the weavilles.

 

I honestly barely remember anything about that season of Torchwood except Spike from Buffy being in it. and Owen dies, comes back from the dead and dies again right? this is why you don't put Chibnall in charge lmao

regardless, Children of Earth is so worth sticking through those first two seasons

Midway through S3 of Torchwood and it’s better, but in a world of aliens and time travel, the ineptitude of the government is so ridiculous and unbelievable. There’s an entire elite task force committing several murders and bombings to cover up 1965, when every major government has done worse things than that and we already know about them. Then this group decides to send millions of kids to the aliens with like no thought when the 4, 5, 6 hadn’t even done anything yet to warrant being scared until it was already decided. I get government leaders are slimeballs, but this is too much. Capaldi was a fun surprise, but even he sucks. Plus not to be Homer asking Where’s Poochie, but if this was even a possibility, The Doctor would step in for something this big.

 

So I wasn't the biggest fan of the first RTD era but I hope he writes more to his strengths this time around. When he's trying to write epic or funny stories, I think he falls flat on his face. Before the Chibnall era, I thought series 2 especially was by far the worst season of modern Who. But RTD's best work was late into his run, when he started focusing more on the psychological stuff. Midnight, Turn Left, and The Waters of Mars are the best stories he's written. But if I start seeing stuff like farting aliens and jesus fairy pixie Doctor, I'm gonna check out. lol

 

his writing style has changed a lot over the years. even if the specials are a nostalgia exercise I think Gatwa will get some really good material to work with in his run

 

I think RTD over-corrected for a family audience at the start of his tenure having previously mostly been known for his more adult work. (Also some of the more OTT early stuff, like the plastic Mickey and the emphasis on farting, is alleged to be the work of director Keith Boak, who did the first block of shooting and did not return afterwards).

The fact that he has chosen to come back is what excites me the most.

 

Yeah, I agree he's grown and changed as a writer. I've never been the biggest fan of his first run and hardly return to it, but watching It's a Sin totally changed my mind about him coming back. I think the 60th specials and Gatwa's new season(s) have the potential to be really strong

 

Haven't caught up since midway through the last Capaldi season but I got chills watching this
