I mean, I think it’s better to view this as food. Everybody has different tastes and preferences. You have your fast food and you have gourmet food. This movie was fast food. So, yea, a lot of people liked it. And that’s fine. I enjoyed it in that way last night. Like, no shame in it. But with an IP as popular and iconic as Mario, it should be more than the McDonald’s buffet that orange jackasses offer guests. Success does not equal quality. We all know this. I’m glad it’s doing well as I hope future NCU movies have stronger writers/scripts. The pieces were largely there for this to be great. It feels like a couple too many cooks were in the kitchen or a couple people had too much say on how the kitchen staff works.

I'm really getting tired of the food analogy being trotted out every time there's an argument about a form of media being consumed that is at odds with critics and critical people.

Maybe it's okay for people to like something without having to undermine them by comparing it to a Happy Meal at McDonalds, yeah?

Like, the amount of overanalyzing being done about this movie is extremely painful.

I'll write you into all of my songs Supporter

Lowery has a great approach here. Kohn seems to be coming to a different conclusion than Lowery proposes with regards to these types of movies

hence why he’s one of my favorite directors working today

I read the article and I like what Lowery is trying to say and the way he talks about it in a way that isn't arrogant or insulting, which is something I can't say for the writer of the article proper. The writer sounds like a guy in search of a mission that no one asked him to go on.

    Well, if the shoe fits…

I like McDonald’s. But I don’t pretend it’s the greatest food for me. I accept it for what it is. Normally, hot tasty food prepared for you for relatively cheap, especially if you use the deals on the app. I am a McDonald’s person, so nobody should take what I said as a slight to what they like. Watching “fast food” movies won’t make you fatter if you watch them more than other types of movies at least.

Before Josh chimes in, that’s all I have to say. Not going back and forth. I’ve said my piece and will read any replies.

Okay, I do agree with this. The writer was overly harsh.

Movie was alright. That's all there is to it.

Excited to see the universe expand with the new movies.

I do have hopes for future movies. A stronger script could work way better. All the pieces are there.

Oh, and this is so barely a thing, but for some reason I was slightly bothered by it. Bowser and such actually saying they will “kill” Mario. I have no recollection of it being used in a Mario game. Again, NOT a big issue or anything. It just stuck out to me. Wasn’t expecting it.

This was unfortunately way too shallow and hollow for me. You have one of the biggest IPs out there that can keep the audience engaged on name alone and use it to say…nothing. The sad thing is it was right there to just be slightly deeper by leaning into Mario/DK wanting their father’s approval, have Luigi grow into his bravery, and add a layer to Peach wanting to not fail her people or something and it would have been passable. In this form, it just feels like a long ad for their games.

The blue dude was great. Frances is my favorite old school Mario character.

I fucking hated that blue luma. I really enjoy nihilistic humor, but I just thought not only was it out of place, but it just wasn't written well.

if you didn't get heart and sincerity from James Cameron's Avatar 2 the way of water you have no soul

more heart and sincerity in that one masterpiece than every American movie released in 2022 combined

but let's not get into it in the Mario thread
