I came home after the movie and immediately started playing New Super Mario Bros U. Shit's hard!

  2. One thing I appreciated was they didn't make Mario a wisecracker, he didn't always answer with quips or pop culture references like Detective Pikachu and even Sonic, and when he did it was subtle

Yeah immediately after the film I bought Mario kart 8 deluxe since it was 33% off on the eshop and I get the dlc with my expansion pass subscription. I feel for their marketing scheme.

The movie was fine, fun to see the references and easter eggs and all that. Thin plot, poor pacing with no character development. But it's a movie based off video games, so I should have expected that lol. Also didn't really love some of the voice acting choices as much as others did.

As far as character development goes I felt I got more than I expected. Also like the idea of their world/our world for sequels. I feel a Peach origin story for the next movie makes sense. Then give DK his own movie. Just recast Fred Armisen. He was probably my least favorite voice actor.

I came home and bought Super Mario Odyssey. Never played that one yet.

Odyssey is so fun. It’s just a joy to play. I actually liked and used motion controls for it. It makes the bowser fights feel so satisfying. Enjoy!

  7. It's crazy that a Super Mario movie gets less of a pass on thin plot and lack of depth than the Avatar sequel which to me had an even thinner plot but with none of the heart and sincerity.

Real missed opportunity to not confirm Mario’s last name. Is it Mario? I need this in the sequel.

Turns out Mario's key demographic has always been (checks notes) male Latino, Hispanic, and white college students.

I haven’t seen Avatar, so I can’t fairly react to that take. But I’ve never exactly heard great things story wise for Avatar. But I also just don’t care to read or listen to much about it, so again, not really fair to base any comments on.

Avatar: The Way of Water was actually structured well and had basic character beats taking you from scene to scene that made sense. Bad comparison.

This movie does the absolute bare minimum to the point where I was getting frustrated that every single character would be introduced, and for no other reason than - "well they are in Mario" did they get on board with the quest.

Mario himself has like 6 different character arcs that they throw at him and drop all of them depending on scene to scene. "My dad thinks i'm an idiot" Cut that shit out lol My half assed initial rewrite of this movie would be to hone in on him and Luigi's relationship and bring it home with actual payoff in why they need to work together as "The Super Mario Bros."

It's not rocket science, there is basic stuff here that could be fixed to make this more coherent. No one is asking for Citizen Kane. Just not a movie that feels like 3 different Mario movies that all came together due to executive demands from multiple companies

I'm leaning towards "this is completely soulless corporate garbage designed for babies" and yet i'll still see whatever nintendo movies Universal/Illumination make next

Avatar: The Way of Water is a masterpiece. We all know this. I have zero issues with that movie.

I did read it, but stopped when I got to

I get this movie didn’t have much a story but the author of that article is being so dramatic that it’s comical.
