  1. if a song has strings on it, then you have to like it just as much as another song with strings, or else you're a hashtag fake fan.

    Things have changed.

I guess from, like, a "Heaven, Iowa" standpoint, there's a little there in "Bishops Knife Trick."

But then again, I don't really hear that much IOH as everyone else. This is a more ambitious SRAR to me. And it's great.

I think all their albums are good to great.

I've probably been guilty of this, but it's okay to like a band's new album and not like the previous one(s). Hindsight won't always make previous entries into a band's catalog sit better.

  5. Besides the interludes, "Heaven, Iowa" is probably my least favorite song on the new album.

Glow vinyl is notorious for sounding like crap. Give it a listen and let us know what you think.

“Stay Frosty Royal Milk Tea” is a banger. MANIA isn’t as successful as a whole imo as SRAR or this new one, but that opener into “The Last of the Real Ones” is such a hype opening to an album.

The only reason “Stay Frosty” isn’t necessarily one of their best openers is because they have a handful of “best openers,” lol; truly one of their consistent strong points.

I think Hold Me Like a Grudge is my favorite, along with Fake Out. So Good Right Now is easily my least favorite.

  15. I know people always have the "not enough guitars" argument about their last couple albums vs this new one, buuut I think the drums are where the focus for me is. Mania has barely any real drums. It's at least 90% programmed/electronic drums, while SMFS has mostly real drums. To me, that makes it feel more like a "return to form" than anything about the guitars. Real sounding drums gives the songs more of a rock vibe and less of a modern pop vibe, even with all the synths and pop ear candy stuff.

I'm thinking specifically about Heaven Iowa, I am My Own Muse, Flu Game, and So Much for Stardust. I think they have similar atmospheres (tense and brooding) and compositional elements (orchestral flourishes).

Not even remotely what I said.

Sure, but sometimes hearing aspects of a previous record you don't like in a style you prefer can help you to appreciate what other people enjoyed so much about it.

The "not enough guitars" thing has always been nonsense: there are prominent guitars in every song on every one of their post-hiatus albums. Fair point about the drums, especially for AB/AP, but you're vastly overstating the case re:Mania. Acoustic drums are used throughout the album to give momentum to songs – Bishops Knife Trick being a clear example of that.

  20. yeah, i said 90% not 100%. the vast majority of Mania is electronic drums, while the vast majority of SMFS is acoustic drums.

Bingo. The drums are the much bigger sound change on ABAP and Mania.

I have a copy. A lot of surface noise as expected.

i’ve been asking for others’ opinions on how the other variants sound but I haven’t gotten a response yet. Most of FOB’s albums sound pretty bad on vinyl so I’m curious about this one.

I find this a bizarre take. AB/AP has far more drum programming than Mania.

If you don’t believe me, take it from Andy himself; at around 9 minutes in the below interview he talks about Mania containing the most live drumming of the post-hiatus records (pre-SMFS)

  25. maybe, but regardless, i'm not a fan of either of those albums. the drums are only part of the problem i have, personally. but that's another topic. i just think the drums on their last few albums should be more of a talking point than the guitars.
