These video game movies are like here's the video game you like in a movie. But if you don't like the video game there's no actual movie

I'm going to like it though because i like Mario and i like video game

I'm not going into this film wanting an insane story. I'm going into this film wanting to see the visuals, the characters, the cameos, and the nostaglia throwbacks. Which, even according to the bad reviews, it delivers on.

  8. I mean if anyone is going into this expecting more than a series of Mario references loosely tied around a generic Mario narrative that bases its entire theme on something like “with friendship and teamwork anything is possible” then idk. Were these people expecting Nintendo to pull a Paddington 2 and use Mario to critique the prison system or something

We can admit that the bar has been raised by movies like “The Lego Movie” where it has all those things and a story with heart. I don’t get the “Shut up and enjoy your references” defense from Mario heads (not specifically targeting anyone in here).

I do think that Nintendo believes at this stage that anything other than an inoffensive bare bones plot will somehow hurt their brand

It's possible someone had a Lego Movie sized vision and got reigned in heavily by Nintendo corporate. Honestly, makes sense they went with Illumination

I think the film can still be decent despite what reviews it gets. Obviously viewing the film as someone that enjoys the games and wanting just that will be different than a film critic’s point of view, though.

I mean on the one hand this should’ve been an absolute slam dunk with the art style and animation but we all know they fumbled the casting bad and apparently couldn’t put together an entertaining romp for kids and adults alike, which is not an uncommon thing for animated films! there’s tons of good kids movies out there that aren’t ridiculously deep or heavy handed! However on the other hand it’s going to make absolute boat loads of money and nothing will be learned

Critics (good critics) are able to temper expectations depending on what they’re reviewing, I highly doubt anyone was using the Citizen Kane rubric when grading this one…

  18. Yeah I get it, I also want to like the movie. But I’m also not really talking about you or anyone in this thread lol. It’s about people going to see a video game movie and then leaving reviews like “it feels like you’re watching a video game” and “it regurgitates the Mario mythology”

Tbh that first example isn’t exactly unfair in my opinion, the entire point of adapting games to a different medium is to have a new experience with it, what’s the point if it still just feels like watching a video game? I think that can be a legitimate criticism. However I’m sure there are people who think video game character = it’s a video game and don’t take into account what makes a movie/tv and a video game different experiences

I don’t think they did either, but someone viewing this from the lens of wanting to experience Mario on the big screen and just enjoy seeing that world will be different than a film critic who will narrow down on the story and the emotional beats being just as important.

I don’t think either are wrong, it’s just different views and expectations. I never expected this film to have more of a story than the games have so I wouldn’t view the film as bad for having a paper thin story. A film critic has to factor in the story so it’s already a different grading scale.

I don’t think critics are the only people who want a decent story (personally I would like a good story. nothing crazy, just something good.) but sure yeah the vast majority of people (aka the lowest common denominator) aren’t gonna give a shit and are just in it for the Easter eggs. I’m just saying the reviews have plummeted my semi-high expectations based on the trailers

I feel like David Sims gives a pretty even-handed critique of it, even for the people who would say “Well I wouldn’t expect old movie critics to get it anyway.”

no just that it's a fresh stab at world building and hopefully the Nintendo cinematic universe can do that too
