I think Gloria Johnson says it best

in this specific example its an escalation of the war thus increases the probability of a large catastrophic global war. its expansion is actually a major factor in the lead up to this war.

but in general, it is a US led "defensive" pact founded on anti-socialism and imperialism that has done such things as turning Libya into a failed state and slave market, the invasion of Afghanistan, bombing of Yugoslavia, repressing anti-colonial struggles in the former Portuguese colonial empire. it maintains the hegemony of the global north, west, north atlantic, etc. over the global south.
