I haven’t rewatched the 4th one in years. Might do that tonight and give the definitive answer. The fridge scene isn’t that crazy compared to some stuff from the first 3.

This is a great way to put, I think. 4 really had a lot to live up to.
I do agree with the spoiler'd bit and the lack of killing. Truly felt like they wanted so badly to do a hand-off to Shia but just....didn't.
Yup, I agree with this. 4 is a fun flick definitely not terrible but also still lacking.
Yeah on my last rewatch I found the racism very.....tough
Exactly, Temple has hearts being ripped out through chests and blood that brainwashes you when you drink it? I dunno...

I enjoyed 4 when I first watched it in theaters. I haven’t fully rewatched it since (only catching a few scenes here and there on tv), but when I have the bits and pieces have been worse then I remember.

Haven’t seen 4, curious what I’d think of it as the kind of movie viewer I am now. Especially immediately after revisiting the earlier films (don’t think I’ve actually sat through any of them in full in my adult life, weirdly enough).

What I know about that polarizing twist/reveal/whatever sounds Good, Actually to me, and that fridge thing or whatever also seems dumb (complimentary). My only hang up is that some of the action I’ve seen clips of look like an unappealing version of green screen & CGI.

This has been my rank for a bit, but it's been a while. I still love 2 though.

The biggest knock I've had for 4 is the CGI, there's a few scenes that are just....bad. Wish they had kept them more grounded.

I really don’t mind "the twist" in Crystal Skull. It never felt out of place with the rest of the series. My memory is a little hazy on it, but I recall knowing about it going into the movie. Wasn't it talked about in the trailer and the marketing of the film?

Yea, it wasn’t a twist. The other three focus on religious “myths,” for lack of a better phrase. 4 was NOT that.

I mean, sure, it's not exactly the same as focusing on religion. I don't mean to insult anyone's religion here, but to me, there's really not that big of a difference between religious myths and sci-fi myths. Or I guess the way the series approaches and explains both feels consistent throughout.

Temple of Doom has major issues, and it's dark as hell, but it's still a solid adventure movie. It is the weakest of the original three though. Crystal Skull is a terrible movie.

It’s not the same. With one, you can have actual historical artifacts that are claimed to have existed, it brings potential reality into the movie. If they possess any power or deeper meaning can be up for debate in any direction. Aliens (Josh watch the movie so I don’t feel obligated to use tags haha) are not going to have that aspect. It removes the historical aspect for sci-fi/fantasy. Which isn’t a bad thing on it’s own. There’s nothing wrong with the concept. But it’s not what the OG trilogy did. I don’t think Indy would say anything involving you know what belongs in a museum the same way he does in the OG. I think that shift was a mistake and loses an aspect that makes the OG movies better than 4.

Temple of Doom has some awesome set pieces in it, plus peak fitness Harrison Ford running around shirtless always puts a smile on my face.

4 isn’t great, but it’s way less offensive than a lot of blockbusters that have come out since. Still, not great.

    True.

But they made such weird choices. Like the whole “part time” line. Why is the better take in the trailer only? Bizarre.

The reasoning that I had heard was given Indy's age in Skull it placed the film setting at different time and so they were drawing on the Sci-Fi B movies of that time. I found that reasoning to be satisfactory.

LOL I understand their choice. That doesn’t mean it’s a good choice or that it doesn’t weaken the movie.

Again, I haven't watched it in years (and I don't plan on rewatching it ahead of this release), but the way each artifact is explained in the movies themselves feels consistent across the board. Yes, the first three are more grounded in history and real-world culture, but each film's explanation for why each exists and why people would be after them doesn't strike me as a major departure. Hell, it's not like they pulled it all completely out of thin air the kick-off for the whole story takes place in area 51, and while it's a conspiracy theory and not religion, it's still based in part on a belief that has permeated itself in American culture. When each entry in the franchise uses each artifact in fantastical ways, whether or not the artifacts themselves are rooted in reality makes little difference. The context in the film matters more than the relationship to the real world.

Just remembered they jump out of a plane on a raft in temple and survive. That’s dumber than the fridge scene.
