Watched The Good The Bad and The Ugly for the first time in maybe 5-6 years tonight. There’s really not much more to say about it that hasn’t already been said 1001 times before, but that final Mexican stand off, is cinema at its absolute best. The perfect combination of image and sound, and then interrupted with an edit - film at its best.

Also makes me really miss cinemas, because that is a film clearly best seen on a 60 foot screen, not on a 20 inch laptop.

Why do you have such a big laptop?

    Trying to compensate for something...

Either that, or I have no idea when it comes to estimating size - I don’t know if cinema screens are really 60 foot either, or if that’s too big.

A nearly two year old recommendation at this point, but I watched this tonight, and found it absolutely fascinating. The way he positions and moves his camera is really unique. Manages to walk the line between the more sexually explicit Pinku films, as well as like Yoshida esque new wave arthouse films.

jesus this was 2 years ago? I could probably come up with an entirely different list for every year now

Rather than repeating the threads, doing something similar but for countries, might be interesting, threads on films from different parts of the world. If people enjoyed the bracket, we could have a big jingoistic showdown at the end.

Could break it down into decades + countries in some cases, as there's too much to fit into a thread on American cinema, for example.

Countries would be fun except for the very obvious differences in output.

Could make for an interesting, possibly informative ride

You might need to get a little loose with it. Like you can easily fill a slate for Korea, Japan, France, Italy, Sweden, etc., but you might want to combine the Balkans, or areas of Africa or they'll get dwarfed.

Watched a film called Black Tight Killers tonight, from 1966; Black Tight Killers - Wikipedia

Absolutely loved it. It doesn't make much sense, but you can't take your eyes off it either way. It's a glorious bit of Technicolour nonsense.

It opens with a war scene, and gloriously the film is using fireworks instead of traditional explosions, which look absolutely brilliant, and set the tone just right; this film won't always make sense, but it'll look gorgeous doing it.

The whole thing is so vibrant and colourful, that it feels a bit like a dream. We have the Black Tight Killers of the title, a girl gang dressed in leather like the Pink Ladies from Grease. Underneath their biker clothes, they're all wearing different colour bra and pants, like some form of Power Rangers. One of them throws vinyl records like deadly blades.

It's an absolute hoot basically. Would highly recommend tracking it down (Happy to be PM'd if it's difficult to find), and slightly switching off and enjoying the ride.

Maybe the best year in film.
