the Val Jester throwback is kinda cute but ugh yeah miss me with "the zday I die, the zday I die, where will we beeeeeee" ad nauseum

 

Ive also enjoyed a majority of their songs much more live than on record. Especially the songs i dont like the studio versions of.

 

The first verse and bridge are phenomenal

"I get a little punchy with the vodka just like my great uncle Valentine Jester did

It's a great song, and the sentiment of wondering where the person you love will be the day that you die is extremely relatable during a breakup/divorce. It really works for me, especially in context of the album.

 

glad it works for you. it's by no means a bad song, just never really connected with me and it's a shame because I adore the rest of the album

 

verses remind me of mistaken for strangers

 

Nobody Else Will Be There is the only song from the A side that I would consider essential. B side goes hard though.

System is my least favorite single they have released lol

 

"Born to Beg" is the only one I would lose from the A-side

 

System is phenomenal

ya if not for the callback it's one of the worst songs they've ever done imo

I like Turtleneck enough, def good. Even being harsh on it, those are legit the only two non stellar songs on the record imo.

 

the reason why Turtleneck sticks out so much is they don't really do songs like that anymore. scruff it up a bit and throw it on Alligator and it fits right in

Yeah I don’t even think it’s a bad song. I actually like it, but it feels out of place on the album

Only got to listen once at work holding my phone up to my ear but this song sounds awesome.

 

Might just be being a curmudgeon but this is shaping up to be the hardest a band has died for me in a single album cycle since the national put out high violet

kidding about half of that

 

Lyrics are there, music just…isn’t for me on the first listen.

I’m sure once Apple Music catches up and I can listen to something of higher quality than YouTube on my phone I’ll be able to dig in more.

 

I actually like this one

 

Pretty good track. I think I like the first single better. Both are better than Weird Goodbyes.

Edit: Enjoyed it more on my second listen. It’s nothing exciting and definitely one of those National tracks that will please some and bore others.

 

Basically this. It'll scratch the itch for some, I'll enjoy it when it comes on, but it's never going to be one of my favorites.
