It's interesting. I think this speaks to the level of inhumanity we treat celebrity, especially the most "elite" of celebrity, the A-listers, where we don't feel they are owed the same common decency that any person in our daily lives would be afforded.

Less extreme examples include the public probing of tabloids into the private failings of marriages like Brangelina, the insensitivity with which we treat delicate issues like child abuse allegations against celebrities (also most recently seen in Brad Pitt), and the way we so often act like stars are "inviting" unflattering paparazzi shots of them.

What Kinsella said was disgusting to be sure, but it also speaks to a larger society wide insensitivity towards celebrity.

  2. Agreed. And compared to a lot of other "jokes" and things I've been hearing today on the subject, Mike's comment was pretty low on the totem pole, in my opinion.

You bet. I didn't listen to them for a good while until I could digest the arguments and points of view that you, and some other posters, brought up.

Yeah, second attempt to like this and I'm still not feeling the album. Catching up on these past two pages and I feel better about not liking it.

Aaaaaand *delete from iTunes music library*

genuine question: do you listen to more than like ten bands? not trying to shame, just curious, your first post in this thread made me think that, hah

Haha. Yes, but I probably have a core 10 or so bands that remain on heavy rotation.

I am admittedly picky, but have expanded my library and tastes pretty well this past year, after several years of not trying to venture out of my comfort zone.

  7. Man, I can't imagine even listening to only 10 bands each day! haha

Thanks to everyone who responded bc this is something I think about a lot. i doubt I will stop listening but the whole respect thing has definitely been altered. I think its impossible for you to not have how you interpret the music altered when you know certain things about the person. I know a lot of people who wouldn't care and then some people who would, I guess it depends on the person. i think its important to recognize that what he said was wrong and that I shouldn't make excuses for him just bc he happens to write music that I enjoy.

I've got a long way to go to broaden my listening. I know my tastes are still too narrow. I'm working on it. Haha.

Edit: Seeing @teebs41 talk about how many records he can get through in a day. Haha. I'm lucky if I can get through 1-2 albums a week.

make sure you are giving things at least 3 listens. Your brain is looking for similar sounds and tones, so when you hear a band or a singer that you arn't used to it can be jarring at first. I almost didn't listen to the hotelier bc I thought the vocal were too harsh..

Would have been the worst mistake of my life ha

Yeah, I still don't enjoy anything except Goodness from The Hotelier. Their singles hooked me.

Beggars was the album that showed me that more than one listen is required to determine an album's quality. I did not like it on my first several listens, but something pushed me to keep trying (I think it was seeing them live with Brand New), and around ten or so spins I was in love with it.

  13. Well, granted, I drive back and forth from work every day (I can usually get through almost a whole album each way), and I listen to music all day while I'm working too, AND I listen to music when I'm at home. So yeah, I definitely listen to a lot. Maybe too much. Nothing usually sticks with me long enough to make informed decisions on whether or not I love something or not a lot of times.

My commute to work is 5 - 10 minutes. My time alone to listen to music is rare. This is what having kids will do. All areas of my life are affected. Haha.

y'all have a job? go to school? unless you're listening to something on shuffle (i tend to listen to full albums straight through before switching), I can't fathom listening to more than ten artists a day
