I think there were a few main drivers during the pandemic for tech companies. First, there was a demand for services, especially productivity and collaboration services, because of the switch to a remote/distributed workforce.

That same remote/distributed workforce caused companies to finally realize (or accept, because they had no choice) that they didn't have to have everyone in the same place to make things work. So instead of having to hire all of their developers and engineers in Silicon Valley, where it's really expensive to hire those people, tech companies could hire them anywhere and reduce the salary to reflect the cost of living where the employee actually lived.

Interest rates were super low, so money was cheap and these companies could afford to borrow and invest that money back in their companies where even a modest ROI would be a net gain because of the low interest rates.

Yup. I've played around with ChatGPT to see if it can help automate some work stuff and it's incredibly unreliable. I would absolutely never trust it in a production environment on it's own. You have to massage the hell out of it, and at that point, I haven't saved any time.

Just the quintessential tech bro recycling bad business ideas and rebranding them as "disruption" and "innovation".

I haven't played with it much, but I assume the commercial versions have features that assist with some of that massaging once you get it setup. Like I could imagine an ecommerce company feeding it a bunch of existing product descriptions, it learns from those as the basis of its model, and then you can just give it the name, manufacturer, and specs of a new product and it spits out something in seconds. I could see a similar thing for standard press releases: ABC Inc. and XYZ LLC want to announce a partnership, here are quotes from ABC's head of business development and XYZ's head of product, and that's it.

But I also think that's something that more or less existed 3 to 5 years ago, it just wasn't available to the general public.

Right now the best use I can think of for it would be to overcome writer's block/blank page syndrome. I have a general idea of what I want to write about but don't know where to start, so I feed it a prompt, read the output, feed a couple rounds of comments/revisions, and then I have something to take on my own and work from.

I don't know a single person who has VR goggles, but I feel like they've been talked about in media for over a decade now.

I’m flying from NYC to Orlando. My flight was suppose to be at 12pm but been delayed several times because the plane was coming from another airport and was delayed there. The plane arrived but it’s now 3pm and we are still not boarding. They just came on the intercom and said they have a slight dilemma because our plane is out of service so now they need to get us a new one.

I usually like jetBlue but this is ridiculous. But I guess all airlines suck right now

  14. I feel like people don't understand exactly what the 3/5ths compromise was. It wasn't that every black vote counted as 3/5ths a white vote, slaves weren't voting anyway, it was counting them for purposes of allocating congressional seats. So making slaves count as 1 person would've been an even bigger concession to slave states.

see this is why I drink before I fly. Them just saying “oh shit yeah this plane doesn’t work probably anymore” scares the shit out of me.

Well yeah but the bigger point was it enshrined in our country’s founding document that a certain group didn’t even count as a person specifically because of their race haha. The whole “property, not a person” thing later confirmed in Dred Scott. So it’s probably one of the biggest pieces of hard evidence that our country was indeed founded on racism

VR has been "right around the corner" for at least 30 years.

    It's the original self-driving car.

Yeah, I have a friend who's actually using the backend API vs the chat box that is more accessible. It is absolutely helping save him time on entrepreneurial projects once he trains it.

I've used it to help with editing for clarity, writing summaries, and inspo when I have writer's block. Found it helpful, not flawless. But then I'm not expecting flawless!

LOL. Or I can use that hour each day to walk my dog, watch a show, play, guitar, read a book, or do a million other more fun things!
