The Ti West controversy is funny. It shows just how irony poisoned a lot of online film culture is.

That kind of humility is important. A lot of people get mad that they think they are film experts but have never heard of a Jeanne Dielman or Yi Yi, but I will freely admit to not knowing very much about paintings or pre-pop music.

I don't see a problem with TI West's list lol All good movies. (fine there's a Polanski in there but it's fucking Chinatown)

Film Twitter (and twitter) needs to just die.

Lol I clicked on the twitter of someone mocking Ti West and they are in the top 1% of Death Grips listeners for 2 years in a row now.

I saw Eyes Wide Shut last week and want to add it to my list but that’s way too soon

All incredible films. I wish I had seen The Seventh Seal before twenty-plus years of references in other movies or shows.

    Was it your first time?

saw it in college in 2005, there are moments in it I would consider among the scariest in any film I’ve ever seen (namely the interrogation at the party and Cruise being followed, that score my god) (It’s in my top 10).

It’s a cool literary experiment, for sure. But what a slog—always sorta shocks me when people put it on their list. I think it’s more a point of pride in actually finishing it haha. I enjoy my fair share of challenging literature but I generally don’t want my reading experience to feel like homework to the extent that book demands.

That’s kind of how I feel about Infinite Jest although there were large chunks I found really engaging and am glad I read it

Yes I loved Infinite Jest, even when it was difficult it felt worth it because of the subtance behind it. House of Leaves does not have that feeling for me.

    keep on with the pairing
    house of leaves - Memento
Infinite Jest - Synecdoche New York

starting Jeanne Dielman tonight. I will probably have to watch it over 3 night since I can barely make it through an episode of a tv show on a work night

Petite Maman making it is really something. Not that it isn't great, but most countries didn't even get the money until less than a year ago.

People aren't going to like Magnolia making it, but it deserves it.

Petite Maman is my favorite film of the last 3-4 years so I’m really glad to see it make the list. No Haneke or Kieslowski, big omissions. 3 Colors, Veronique, The White Ribbon, Code Unknown. Also surprised to not see The Master, Burning or Certified Copy as some more modern entries. Great list though.

They leaned a lot harder on genre films than I expected. For better or for worse it reflects how they widened the number of voters.

Petit Maman is a fantastic film, I think I've come to like it just a hair more than Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

I'm going to try and see more of the older films on the list I haven't seen before. I've also never seen #1, so I'm going to add that to my watchlist for this month.

Glad they added Twin Peaks: The Return. As if I haven't sung its praises enough, it really is one of the best tv/film experiences I've ever had.

Also thrilled to see a few by Apichatpong Weerasethakul, VERY well deserved.

I recently watched Taste of Cherry for the first time the other day. It was good, though pretty heartbreaking.

Others I'm happy to see make the extended list: Grave of the Fireflies, Suspiria, Magnolia, Tree of Life, It's A Wonderful Life, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre(!!!)

I like Magnolia, but including it over The Master is crazy

I would agree with that. The Master is maybe Anderson's best film. I would put Punch-Drunk Love above Magnolia as well.
