A hot take I have is that any protest/appeals words spoken to the ref shouldn’t be able to be carded/fined. Refs make mistakes every game and aren’t held accountable for them. Asking the ref to go look for (example given) a handball on a video replay system should 100% be acceptable. Especially when VAR doesn’t intervene nearly as often as it should especially on fouls. Just make it up in added time. 3 refs can’t adequately watch 22 players who are faster, younger, and more fit than them.

It’s mad to ask athletes to be ultra competitive and then to penalize them for showing emotion in a highly charged environment right after they’ve been fouled.

Obviously, it wouldn’t be a perfect system because there has to be accountability for racist remarks and what not. But refs aren’t infallible and it’s exhausting watching leagues and organizations bend over backwards to protect them instead of forcing them to make better decisions and/or admit they’re wrong.

Of course, the instant it moves into physical reactions, punish them.

Totally disagree. Others sports manage to be highly charged without refs being surrounded and abused.

The refs need more accountability. Mic them up, have it broadcast to TV if not in the stadium, ban any players from speaking to the ref other than the team captain, also broadcast captain's speech. Make it like rugby.

I think refs in all sports are largely not great and that players and coaches act like a bunch of petulant children and get the reffing quality they deserve for their on field temper tantrums.

I think coaches and players would act way better if reffing was better... see: rugby.

Which? Because most of the majors I watch have this problem to some extent.

  6. Are these reporters not tired of reporting the same thing on Porro everyday? Because I’m tired of reading the same thing every day lol

Coming from baseball, the crowding around the ref has always been wild to me. There is almost no leeway for arguing with an umpire. Baseball players sometimes get ejected from the game without even saying anything

MLB only just miced up umpires to clarify decisions after review, which has been a welcome change.

Nothing says insecurity like the second sentence here. Authority should be able to be questioned, no matter the circumstance or tone if there is a question about a decision. Especially in an era where athletes so greatly out-perform the refs in fitness AND where video replay exists.

But baseball (football, basketball, hockey, etc) has something that footy doesn't: if a player is ejected, another can step in. All the more reason that reffing in footy has a higher impact on a "dissent" yellow than in any other sport and why I'm against it.

As with diving, if referees booked a player every time they yelled at them, it would stop incredibly quickly. As with diving, the fact that this has never happened suggests to me the powers that be don't want it to, probably because the outrage cycle is so ingrained in football at this point.

Atleti have done an absolute madness getting not just 50m, but the trigger down to THREE appearances lol

100% agree with this. But this happens literally every game ever. Why are we suddenly getting called on it?

Reminds me of when Klopp made a comment about the PGMOL and then Liverpool kept getting these weird technicals pulled up.

If I don’t see a tidal wave of these over the next month, it’s complete bullshit.

Let's get these people moving faster!

Can't help but wonder if Arsenal players would be forgiven if Arteta himself wasn't so over the top on the touch line. He and Klopp really are the most antagonistic to referees of any managers in the league right now.

I'm all for VAR used for offside confirmation, but the systems and rules in place really need to reckon with the relationship between accuracy and precision.

  21. Almost a great assist for Felix in his first attacking touch

I don't especially care, but I am curious if Chris Sutton does anything at the Beeb other than complain about Chelsea.
