Let's talk about board games & card games, and share recommendations.

Lately my boyfriend and I have been into Linkee and Exploding Kittens, because we've been trying to find good two-player games we can play on a night in.

I'm playing Subterfuge. It's a mobile game, sure. But it's practically a board game in digital form.

I have Lord of the Rings Confrontation. I play it with my SO. Also grabbed Elevenses. Is there anything you'd recommend?

We just picked up Talisman: The Magical Quest game on Friday night, and loved it. Amidst such time consuming, beastly games like Eldritch Horror and Mansions of Madness, it was nice to play something that is simple while remaining varied. Highly recommend. We loved it enough to run out the next morning and get the Woodlands, Dungeon, and Reaper expansions. We were kind of overwhelmed because we through all three in for our second playthrough, but it was still a blast.

Also, my girlfriend is running her first D&D campaign(5E), and I'm playing for the first time. She's running Murder in Baldur's Gate. It is overwhelming at times, as she is taking a "theater of the mind" approach on this one, but I'm really enjoying playing a half-elf bard.

  6. Would you mind if we renamed the thread to Tabletop Games? Perhaps that's nitpicky, but that way it encompasses board, card, and pen/paper like D&D.

Anyway, I'm a huge tabletop fan, here's my humble collection: surette | User Collection | BoardGameGeek

Also have played a lot of D&D -- started with 3.5, then moved to 4e, Pathfinder, and 5e.

I do Kingdom Death for miniatures and we run Shadowrun campaigns for RPGs. Board games, I do Castles of Burgundy. For card games, I love Fluxx and adore Waterworks (my personal favorite game, and how you ruin friendships).

That loneliness is not a function of solitude.

Played Cards Against Humanity for the first time over the weekend. I had my doubts but it got truly hilarious at times. Not for anyone who gets easily offended though.

Tripped me out hearing some of my buddy's wives that don't often curse drop f bombs while reading cards.

Done. When I was making the title I knew there was a better word, but it escaped me. :)

How is King of Tokyo? I've been thinking about picking that up.

  11. No worries, thanks!

I like it a lot. It's pretty simple, but fun with a group. My girlfriend and I played with just the two of us once and it wasn't that great, I feel like most of the mechanics are designed for like 4-6 players, so just keep that in mind. Probably wouldn't recommend if you're looking for a two player game.

Monopoly rules and the only reason people complain that it takes too long is because they aren't playing it right. Do auctions!

I've been a fan of board and card games for years (my family plays a lot), but only recently have I gotten serious about wanting to branch out and play more, so I'm definitely excited about this thread. I'm looking for recommendations if anyone has any.
Board games: I can get down with a good game of Risk, Stratego, Monopoly, Clue, etc., but I'm trying to branch out from the games I've played for the last twenty years. I own and love Forbidden Island, Forbidden Desert, Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, and Ticket to Ride. I've played and greatly enjoyed Letters to Whitechapel.
Card games: euchre, spades, hearts, and blackjack are usually what I go for, but Sleeping Queens, Five Crowns, Phase 10, and Saboteur are pretty fun too.
D&D etc: I've never played, but I'm a huge fantasy/sci-fi/videogame fan, so it's only a matter of time. Hoping to find a way to try this out sometime soon.

Anyway, if anyone has any recommendations, or likes any of the games I mentioned, or wants to know more about any of those, let me know.

  14. I would recommend Love Letter to just about anyone. It's 2-4 players, but best with 4. The entire game is only 16 cards, so it's extremely portable (comes in a little pouch that you can easily fit in a pocket), yet surprisingly fun. Very easy to learn and rounds are pretty fast. Basically each card is a character and you use character's abilities to eliminate other players.

Overall, my favorite style of game is deception/bluffing, very casual and very social, usually results in a lot of laughs. Love Letter has some of those characteristics, but more things like Sheriff of Nottingham, The Resistance, Coup, and Mascarade. Mascarade in particular I've had a ton of fun with, but the only issue is it's best with large groups (like 6-8), so I normally can only play it at a board game night where there are a lot of people. I would recommend any of the above though if you're a fan of laughing and lying to your friends.

For more serious/strategic games, I'd recommend 7 Wonders and Lords of Waterdeep. I've played both a number of times -- very in-depth games, but still not too difficult for new players to learn. Very good games.

Anyone want to play a game of Subterfuge? :-)

Subterfuge - A week-long game of strategy and diplomacy

Basically it's a mobile (iOS, Android) game that spans an entire week. You get properties at the start of the game like Risk, and you can send them to other properties. The travel time takes hours. And everyday you can recruit specialists that do pretty cool things.

I've played a total of 2 (or 3) games. It's very, very good at destroying friendships. I've done the Neutral Good route and it doesn't work. At all.

    My home :heart:subbed

I tried and pick up a new game a day, working at a boardgame/puzzle shop about to open and needing hella product knowledge.

My favorite games right now are Patchwork, Sleeping Queens, Roll for the Galaxy, Red Dragon Inn, and T.I.M.E Stories. If you aren't playing an ongoing narrative game like the latter or Pandemic: Legacy Season 1, you are absolutely missing out. Absolutely gripping stuff.

My friend group is insane about finding new board games. We're super nitpicky though. Right now our current game when we can all get together is Archipelago and Catan/expansions.

Also super weird, our collective favorite video game is Fortune Street for Wii, which we might be the only people in the world who play it. It takes that friendship-tearing aspect of Monopoly and ramps it up to 11. BUT WITH MARIO AND DRAGON QUEST CHARACTERS. I so wish there was a real tabletop board game version of it.

The board game shop I was recently hired at is opening in time for Tabletop Day. After a solid month of building fixtures, product knowledge, merchandising, and receiving shipment after shipment after shipment, we're finally there.

My staff picks for May are:

    Classic - Ticket to Ride
    Family/Party - Dixit
    Strategy - Kabuki

  22. At PAX East this past weekend I saw a fascinating game in the indie tabletop area -- basically it used a lantern with patterns on it to cast light onto the table, and those spots of light become the board spaces. Here's the Kickstarter, and from what I can tell their intent is for the lantern to be a game system, with multiple different games playable using one lantern.

Doubt everything! And always be the most cautious person in the game. Been backstabbed way more times than I can count
