I'm on SR approaching F&F. I'm not ready

 

Incredible that the band ends the album with the biggest departure in their entire catalog. OH SHIT THE CONVOCATION CALLBACK. It doesn't sound as much of an ending to the band, but more of a reminiscence of their career at the point in their lives right now.

 

With the whole "Saviors Robes" thing... I saw them a little over a year ago and while they had a big crowd and everyone was definitely into it, I was the only one singing the songs that weren't Lights and Sounds or Ocean Avenue, I felt like. I can see how that wears on you after releasing 5 more records.

 

Even though I've never been a particularly big fan of this band, I've enjoyed most everything I've heard, so I want to check this out when I get a chance. This weekend is crazy busy for me, but I'll try to make room for it.

The new one is actually growing on me pretty much. Gotta do this again in a year.

 

Me too. I am very hesitant to rank it above SA/PW though. Have to give it some time to settle.

 

Agree with this. I love the way the entire record flows. No complaints anywhere.

highlight of the album for me is track 4 - a place we set afire.

I need to listen more but Fields & Fences gave me the feels.

 

I generally find myself in line with AllMusic's reviews. It's been that way for at least 10-15 years. Their Yellowcard review is pretty brief but overall it's on point:

However, the real arrow to the heart is saved for the final track, "Fields & Fences." Clocking in at seven minutes of sheer sentiment, it's essentially the very last thing the bandmembers --Ryan Key, Ryan Mendez, Josh Portman, and Mackin -- want listeners/fans to hear from Yellowcard. As the last notes of the mandolin evaporate into the atmosphere, the Jacksonville stalwarts have already exited the stage. The faces in the audience might be soaked in tears, but after ten albums and 20 years, Yellowcard have left an enduring mark on the modern punk scene. Yellowcard is a near-perfect close to their story.

I gave this multiple listens before posting any real thoughts but I still think this album is still just ok. Like most here, I've listened to their discography leading up to the new one and it just doesn't really measure up IMO. I think it's a top heavy album with the first 4 tracks being the best, esp What Appears and Place We Set Afire.

I forget if it was this thread or the other 2 YC ones, but I agree with whoever said Fields and Fences sounding like 2 different songs. It's a fine acoustic song and then the other 3 mins sound like a different song. The build up is nice when it finally kicks in, but by that point the song feels like it should be ending. I also kind of expected more from the outro, it's the weakest instrumental piece IMO when compared to Three Flights Down, Convocation and the ending to Hollywood Died. All that being said, not a bad album and I'm glad we got it since we weren't owed anything by them if they wanted to call it quits.

Side note, I have LaS behind this album on a playlist and the ending of F&F sounds really cool going right into Convocation.

I agree about F&F, I was sort of hoping for the full band to come in for a final chorus and an epic outro.

There are a lot of great individual songs on the album, but as a cohesive album it isn't very consistent. I still really like it though.

 

I've had it for a few and have listened to it non stop lol

 

Also I want to loooovvee Savoir Robes but the lyrics and auto tune on his voice are forcing me just to like it.

I can't rank this new album yet, nor have I posted about it yet. But I've listened through about 5 times now. And I just have to say, this is by far the most complete Yellowcard album we have ever gotten. This is what I wanted out of Southern Air and Lift A Sail. This is perfect, This is the first time I haven't heard a song where I was like "uh i am not sure if that fits here". Key and Mendez did such a good job producing this album, AND HOLY HELL NATE ON THE DRUMS.

I've discussed this with a few buddies but I say, if this would have been lift a sail, I don't think YC would be broken up, but then again, who knows.

Only one day with Yellowcard and I'm thinking it'll end up near the top.

 

I really enjoy the new album. It's a solid way to go out and I'm happy that they made this to say goodbye to the fans. Overall a pretty dark record and I think the album art fits the record perfectly. I was expecting some real pop punk songs on here to kind of throw back to the early days but I am fine that they wrote some darker faster songs instead

 

Who is the other singer on the song Got Yours? It sounds a little like Kellin Quinn.

 

Thanks for an amazing send off after a fantastic career, Ryan. You guys knocked it out of the park. Sad to see you guys go but thankful that you've left us with such a great catalog of music. Thank you.
