There was no direction in my post whatsoever. Just an opinion. You are free to express your own and if it's that you think the coverage is fine and has no impact, or even heightens your enjoyment, then cool. I think its awful and is cheapening my enjoyment of the world cup but to each their own.

I was trying to describe myself to someone

Hey, remember today, when I got everything wrong? Yeah, me neither.

This competition has been crazy. My next hot take is that the winner of England France wins the whole thing. Let's see how that ages.

Oh yes! Big mad! Day ruined! I may boycott if there's further mention of it being an Elite Eight. And don't even get me started if they start talking about it being a Final Four!

It goes vice versa. If the NFL truly picked up in England, I'd expect and fully support Americans in the UK being mad and annoyed if they had to sit through BBC coverage that explained the game using uniquely English terms (when the equivalent widely accepted term already exists). If your country adopts a sport, adopt it's terminology too. I don't think that should be a controversial opinion but I guess it is.

Argentina/Brazil, England/Portugal but there will be another upset (and France over England won't count, that game is a toss up).

  8. I mean….we call the sport soccer lol adapting the terminology obviously helps in some cases but it doesn’t have to be absolute. Every culture has some unique terminology for the sport.

we should call the the first round of the knock out stage the sweet 16.

also future should do a song named after the world cup.

Yeah the term elite eight is cringe but… Who cares?

Maybe because I’m not American, and therefor don’t have to put up with coverage which creates terms like that, but it isn’t an issue for me.

I just think in the long run, that isn’t a term that will ever impact football. Football has it’s own language already, and as newer US fans get more invested they will learn the “correct”/normal terms anyway.

Newer fans getting into the sport is cool. It’s why I was kind of sad to see the US go out. I knew it would halt interest, so it was good to see Japan and Australia get SUPER into the World Cup with massive viewing figures.

Also, Elite Eight is almost entirely reserved for March Madness. Quarterfinals is used in almost every sport in the US.

Japan getting 20m constant viewers for their final match when it took place between midnight and 3am is crazy.

Language debate aside, I think elite eight is a pretty sweet name. If any event can claim it’s final 8 are truly elite, this is it. I like sweet 16 and final 4 less.

Within the language debate, I’m generally a purist myself and dread the day fox-style coverage is the norm (as it increasingly will be as Americans penetrate the sport more), but it’s hard for us to actually assume the rest of the world uses the same British terminology translated, isn’t it? We like the British commentary and language bc it’s proper and restrained, but can we be sure Italians/Germans/Koreans are saying their equivalent of “they have a lot of quality” (which is itself silly sounding) and not “that was a slam dunk!!”?

I guess that’s a long way of saying I like using the original football language because it sounds nice and feels like the spirit of the game is alive, not because I think it’s actually meaningfully different. Language gets translated and means slightly different things, terminology is no different.

had to convince myself I wasn’t watching Uruguay v Portugal

    It's all hell.

I think the americanization (I don't think that's a word) of football has been going on for decades so it isn't really anything new. When Murdoch owned Sky first introduced the Premier League it was pretty much a direct rip-off on how american sports were being presented in the 90's, all the way down to these poor cheerleaders having to do this hillariously cheesy dance routine on a cold night in Manchester on the first Monday Night Football.

The scene in All or Nothing where he comes to London Colney dressed as Santa and hands out presents to the staff really cemented him as my favourite. You really can’t help but feel he knows how mad this all is and how fortunate he is.

Reminds me of the time Newcastle played Brendan Rodgers' Swansea and won 2-0 with our only two shots on goal all game. Passing the ball around in possession and neat little triangles is all very well and good but it doesn't score you goals.

    hmmm

Imagine having one shot on target in 120 minutes and then claiming the other team offered nothing.

new format: keep all the eliminated teams around to play friendlies on the off days of the knockouts. Surely there are good games to be found between like US-Spain (all midfield, no finish), Japan-Australia (went down swinging), Switzerland-Senegal (the we were blown out match), and South Korea-Poland (out of quirky reasons for this one).

Switzerland-SK is probably a better “we were blown out” match. Also becomes the “fuck the Portuguese language” match.
