I got about 2/3 through a couple years ago and finally stopped. The NY is magical stuff was a bit annoying, but ultimately it was that almost everyone in the book came off as a gigantic asshole that finally killed it for me haha. It was such an interesting read until I realized I was legitimately starting to root against all these bands I like.

I watched the doc and it was fine. I'm just not that nostalgic for that time period yet, if that makes sense. I was a few years too young at the time, but it just doesn't feel like any of the bands featured were/are big enough to warrant this romanticizing.

i love every metallica album but i'm not trying to force this opinion on anyone beyond thinking lulu is owed a severe critical reevaluation

Revisionist history on St. Anger is a huge overcorrection of its initial reception. There are plenty of cool moments but it’s certainly not a “good” record.

Metallica just sounds dated no matter what they try. That style of metal is just what old people still think heavy music is. The drum sounds, the guitar tones, the vocals, it's all of a past era. No one sounds like Metallica anymore, and it ain't because they're the only ones that can do it. No one wants to sound like Metallica because we're all over it except for 'Metallica heads'.

EDIT: Also wrong thread. I thought this was for good/correct opinions.

I'm obviously phrasing it like a smart ass but it's still mostly my opinion. I think Metallica sounds like a relic in metal, and their new stuff is only 'heavy' to the people who remember that it was heavy when it came out, comparative to what the music scene was. They are influential and giants of the industry, I just don't enjoy their music except for recognizing its place in the history of rock. Sure, the production has gotten sharper, but hardwired to self destruct still sounds like Metallica playing the music they played in the 80's just with a few more bells and whistles. It's an extremely outdated form of heavy music . I hear new Metallica, and I don't get excited for something boundary pushing or exciting. I know exactly what I'm going to get and it ain't for me. Thrashy/chuggy riffs (only broken up by an over the top solo), plodding drum beats with little to no variety or fills, 'harsh' vocals that barely enter the territory of yelling or screaming, and overly long songs that outstay there welcome.

I also don't think it's a bad or unpopular opinion for someone my age to think that. Feel free to proof me wrong, but I pinpoint them as having an older fan base who listen out of nostalgia and former worship, and their younger fans grew up with a metalhead dad and 'love the classics'.

I know a lot of heavy music that I listen to wouldn't exist without them, but they do now, so Metallica can go away. They've been replaced.

Ok I agree with the idea that Metallica haven’t progressed and haven’t been particularly interesting in a long time. But that’s different than saying “no one sounds like Metallica anymore or wants to” which is incorrect. There are lots of bands within the realm of metal and punk playing thrash and crossover, and are good at it. Power Trip, for example.

Fair enough. I will check out power trip and go down that rabbit hole for modern bands playing a more 'old school' type of metal and see if any of it interests me.

thrash revival has been big for the last 10+ years. municipal waste, vektor, power trip. just because you aren't seeking it out doesn't mean it's not there.

    Die rad.

Love St Anger. I think Some Kind of Monster (doc, not song) helped me like it from day 1 of seeing it in the movie theater. Album gets too much hate. Also loved that tour.

Meet Me In The Bathroom doc was a snooze. Only band I honestly enjoy out of any of them is LCD Soundsystem, and it didnt have much to do with them.

    thrash will never die

except in the 90s when death metal replaced it

but then it came back with a vengeance and it ain't ever leaving

hell, thrash got better after slayer and metallica pioneered it; possessed, sepultura, and then morbid angel took it to its natural conclusion. and then death metal spawned out of that. the origins of thrash are probably the most important event in all of metal.

Anything after the black album is dogshit comparatively, and there's plenty of much better thrash metal bands in the last 30 years to do it.

    Very much this.

So when's thrash metal Thursday back on the table then? I have a hard time believing that thrash is definitively better than death metal when I've yet to see empirical evidence of it from you in the last couple years.

Might be a bad opinion but at least the bands reviving thrash sound generally pretty good and are at least pushing the genre forward. Beyond the top of the genre, a lot of the bands in the OSDM genre just sound stagnant, and I'd rather be listening to shit like Dismember, Bolt Thrower, or Cianide.

there is def good new death and tech death still coming out. i hear more progression in those genres these days than others. and plenty of the best modern metal releases each year that bridge genres, get partially tagged as death metal. tons of the very best albums from the more modern crust and black metal and other subgenres these days are death metal influenced.

Let's get back to the important point. Metallica's entire discography is excellent and enjoyable.

I didn't post in here because I'm sharing a bad opinion. I came in here because I'm tired of other people's bad opinions.

I'm not trapped in here with you, you're trapped in here with me.
