With Ex Machina and Annihilation I was intellectually and emotionally invested. With Men, the latter was missing. Weird choice that her partner was black. And kind of superficial thematically. I feel like on the other end of the spectrum Tag (the Japanese one with the crazy bus scene) is meant to be this big female empowerment movie and I love it to death but tbh it still feels like "male director does feminism"--that's kind of how Men felt to me. The few female tiktokers I've seen talk about it didn't like it very much, either. I mean, it's not bad, at all, it's definitely worth a watch.

Ex Machina is pretty good but I've fallen asleep every time I've tried to get through Annihilation

 

Garland’s movies do not work for me. Annihilation was okay, but it just made me want to rewatch Stalker.

I think Ex Machina just sucks. Never understood the hype.

Love both movies but Annihilation is damn near perfect to me. I’ve heard of the Stalker comparisons and transparently, have not seen it. I also love Devs a lot.

plan on getting to both of those today and possibly tomorrow

I know neither of those are horror so please forgive me but I now know where I can easily see both and it's pretty awesome

I thought Men was alright. Some really bizarre visuals. Didn’t work as well for me as the other two. But it’s still worth seeing.

LP was my favorite movie from 2021

 

Eh, I liked it okay but was definitely whelmed by the episodic subplots and how sloppy it felt at times. Some really great and funny stuff, and then some of it felt strangely alien to me. Weird movie.

 

do you like any of PTA's other movies?

 

I love most of them aside from Magnolia and LP (and I haven't seen Hard Eight)

 

Haven't seen LP but the age gap thing is widely talked about

 

As much as I enjoy PTA's work, he's also not exactly a likable guy and shouldn't be giving roles to people like Sean Penn imo
