True. I remember seeing the trailer for Amsterdam and thinking it looked awful. But then the person next to me in the theater said “that has everyone, I’d go see that!”

 

I think part of it is people not wanting to watch a bummer movie and who can blame them when everything is a bummer

 

I don’t care about awards (outside of liking when it gives a movie I like a bump, lol), but doesn’t releasing at another time affect the narrative around & attention to a film? Thus affecting its chances of winning?

This post is reminding me of one reason I don’t care about awards.

 

marketing for DWD and Amsterdam were both great, both movies sucked. amsterdam was an incoherent mess written by a dipshit loser but they still cut a good trailer.

 

5 years ago I would have made myself go see Amsterdam. But now I don’t bother with shit I know is going to suck/I know I’ll hate.

 

If a movie "has everyone", I assume it's bad at this point.

Yea, I believe that’s the thinking. Screen your movie closer to awards season so it’s front of mind. I do wonder if the economics of it will eventually push things to spread out though.

 

They’ll just stop making those kinds of films and go all-in on franchise IP.

 

Yeah there are 3 movies out right now that I want to see and there are 3 showtimes a day for each. If I don’t get to them this week I won’t be able to see them in the theater.

 

Is The Day After Tomorrow widely disliked? If so, that's definitely my answer.

Land of the Lost (the Will Ferrel one.) That movie kills me but I am pretty sure it’s pretty widely disliked?

Batman and Robin is unfairly maligned.

 

On Letterboxd, Land of the Lost has an average of 2.4 stars, but Bio-Dome has 2.0 stars. So I’m changing my answer to Bio-Dome. Haha I love that movie.
