they already said that by not boycotting entirely. no nation at this tournament is innocent or will ever protest enough to make up for it. no reason to tempt the refs further on arguably each team’s most important player if every team isn’t taking the same risk.

not saying what they’re doing is right, but it’s understandable. and it appears the confederations made the call, not the players. who, in England’s case, still kneeled “against discrimination” before kick off.

Skip the tournament and people probably just assume you don't qualify. Qatar still gets their sports washed event. It's ultimately not as an effective way of protesting things as facing the challenge head on.

I'll admit Kane is in a somewhat unfair spot needing to go first. He's not the only one being a coward by not doing anything of actual note. Adams is an even bigger coward for the USMNT not even being part of the conversation of maybe wearing somethin. And the other captains of the Euro squads are still also taking the cowards way out. But at the end of the day, Kane's still the captain. He could've defined confederation's call, stood up to everyone and still gone out there and worn the thing. Would've forced the entire media covering the world cup to confront the issue head on if people start getting cards for standing up for things.

But apparently these people are only really doing stuff "kneel against discrimination" which now feels like a rather empty gesture. Only seems like they are willing to do stuff that doesn't produce any long term consequences for them (and honestly begs the question if the only reason they are kneeling against discrimination is they are worried of the consequences if they don't)

It wouldn't have been only a yellow and then move on. Theres not really a rule for such an incident, but from everything I heard it would have either been a yellow card and a subsequent red if the player refuses to remove the armband or the ref would have abondoned the match completely if the player refused to remove it. So a way harsher punishment.

It still would have been great if all FAs went through with it and threathened FIFA to leave the WC if they sanctioned them. They definitely have the power to do it. But I really don't get why people are now so angry with the players. They are not responsible for any of this mess.

Sorry but thats such a stupid point of view. Just because a player does not want to jeopardize the biggest tournament of their career does not mean they don't care about human rights.

But feel free to protest yourself, and I hope you sacrifice enough while doing so. Because otherwise some people might call you a coward in an online forum...

never said they don't care about human rights

just pointing out that if you're worried about "jeopardizing the biggest tournament of your career" -- you're pretty clearly prioritizing your sports / your career over human rights.

  11. It's obviously disappointing to see how it's played out, but placing the burden on a handful of players is such an oversimplification of what is happening.

I mean, this is clearly a bigger decision than an individual player and his own career. Obviously human rights is bigger, but sports means an awful lot to a lot of the country. Beckham got sent off in 98 and became a national villain, people burned effigies of him. If Kane was to get sent off for wearing the armband and England lost, he'd never be able to step outside his house again. The abuse and death threats he'd face would be insane.

Reyna and Aaronson off the bench, I like it. Probably the lineup I would’ve exactly picked. Very excited for this game

Being worried about facing abuse and death threats feels a bit on the nose here, given a lot of the abuse, death threats, and actual death LGBTQ+ people face not just in Qatar but even in places like the US or UK (who aren't multi-millionaires superstars who have the resources to actually stay safe despite the death threats)

Obviously. I'm not saying they have it anywhere near as bad as LGBTQ+ people, but that's the reality of the situation. Players have to think of themselves and their friends and family. It's very, very easy to sit behind a keyboard and call them cowards, but in reality they've been placed in a very difficult situation.
