I mean yeah lol. Like the homer Simpson, oaf at work messes up and causes a meltdown is entirely unrealistic, they have all sorts of self monitoring technology and mechanisms to catch the uranium (or other radioactive element) getting too volatile at the slightest hint. But any natural disaster that hits a nuclear plant can easily be magnified & disrupt all of that technology so it’s not an option that feels fully “safe” lol.

but at this stage of global warming we are juggling double edged swords and right now our best and only option is to try to catch the dullest ones lol. Nuclear plants can power entire metropolitan areas (cities and their suburbs) by themselves and they release no pollution into the atmosphere, the damage that nuclear waste can do is honestly nowhere close to the damage fossil fuels are doing.

But improving batteries is like one of the most important technical demands of our time because they require a lot of rare metals and they are IN EVERYTHING and they are especially hostile to the environment to make the higher capacity / higher voltage they have to be

Some of you have never worked in the service industry with shitty coworkers who never break down boxes and you have to climb into the dumpster to pull out the boxes and break them down so the garbage isn’t spilling onto the ground which the garbage men will leave there because it’s not in their contract to get out of the truck!!!

I don’t blame the garbage men tbh they gotta pick up a LOT of garbage. That’s just why if you get a box, you break it down. It seems like a simple shopping cart thing but I feel like way fewer people do it hahah.

yeah it was definitely the shitty employees but I was the GM and that was not in the contract, they just didn’t want to get out of the truck lol.

Top suggested article: Jacksonville addresses trade rumors.

I don’t think it’s the thread to get too deep into this but a nuclear buildout that would curb fossil fuels enough to prevent climate disaster isn’t realistic. It takes too long

I appreciate you pointing that out. Persoanlly, my opinion is that it’s not either or, we should be utilizing all the clean energy options available to us in a collective solution. I think improving batteries is still necessary and I agree that we can’t ONLY rely on nuclear power, should be a multi pronged solution.

but, what makes nuclear so efficient is how much power they produce, the sheer capacity is insane. Not only does a typical nuclear plant have over 10 times the maximum capacity of a solar farm (roughly 2500 megawatt-hours compared to 250 or fewer) but they also are able to operate at a consistently high conversion rate, with over 90% of the power produced being immediately usable on a constant basis. You can build a single nuclear plant to service literally millions of people.

Because of the battery issue I discussed, solar plants actually only operate at 17-20% year round, which means over 80% of that power is wasted. So actually a 250 MW-h capacity solar farm functionally only produces like 50 MW-h on average. (More in sunnier / desert areas, less in areas with long cloudy winters, so location built is a huge factor too.) Not to mention, they use FAR MORE land… a solar farm needs 31 times as much land to operate at a similar capacity as a nuclear plant (not including the massive waste of power that can’t be stored on cloudy days / nights). So there’s also a trade off with how many trees you have to cut down to find that much undeveloped land in one place in a more populated city area. As such I would argue solar is better for the southwest but nuclear is better for the northeast, for example.

with that in mind, even though nuclear plants can take a decade or two to come online while solar farms only take a year, the amount of power demands that are served by even one new nuclear plant,is staggering for something that has no carbon footprint. It probably makes it about equal to solar in terms of how long it takes to produce THAT much power with new construction. It’s 30-50 times as much power and it takes about 20-30 times as long to build so it’s really just a larger scale solution.

I apologize for going off topic so much in his thread but it’s also a ritual as old as time for us to be off topic in here. It’s my favorite chat thread on chorus

Jets beat themselves today, unfortunately. Wilson needs to improve, but JFM really costed us the game. That was a huge swing.

Hire Mike Kafka and run it back. No QB in this class can do this.
