  1. Paper straws are fine unless I'm drinking something for like a half hour and it starts to deteriorate.

Places could move to reusable straws and wash them but that might be gross though we do use forks that people have used a thousand times already.

We just got solar panels on our house. I was bummed with our roof wasn’t quite big enough to get 100% solar production for our house but we’re close.

  10. I have a combo pet peeve and environmental thing since we were talking about both. This is very 1st world problems probably but annoys the shit out of me.

My township has a public works yard that you can go and drop off bulk trash and recycling. If you want to drop off card board, you are supposed to break it down and flatten it. I'm cleaning out my disaster of a garage and have like a years worth of cardboard. So I break it down and throw it in the car and go to the yard. I get there and all the bins are full to the top because idiots didn't break down their cardboard and just threw in huge tv boxes or appliance boxes. So I have to take the time and try to find a sliver of space to shove in my properly broken down cardboard.

Whatever it cost me an extra few minutes but people are so lazy.

Oh yeah this drives me insane. I haven't used one of those yards in a while but when I did I ran into this exact shit every time and it bothered me so much

This is a problem I have at my apartment complex. We have two dumpsters for trash and one for cardboard and over the years they’ve put up numerous signs that the cardboard/recyclables dumpster needs cardboard broken down and your recyclables just go in - no bags. And yet every fucking day there’s either bags of trash in the wrong dumpster and a dozen left together boxes with styrofoam in there. There’s 36 units in my building so the dumpster fills up quick and of course during holidays it’s a fucking nightmare and people just start piling it up next to it and in front of it so much so that people can’t get to their parking spaces because of all the fucking boxes.

That bothers me a lot too. Especially because my apartment complex shares one small half dumpster with the two quadplexes on either side of us.

Things like the above irritant and my thinking for brief moments that I want to sit down there and wait for someone to come by with an unbroken down box so I can chew them out makes me fearful that eventually I’ll be one of those public freak out videos on YouTube and Reddit lol

No but they are having the same problem with solar as a solution. Batteries aren’t good enough to avoid wasting a lot of power because you can’t save most of it, which greatly reduces the effectiveness of solar plants to service a large range of people. and you run into the same problems with producing the batteries being a heavy trade off with pollution of its own, to even get to the point of using the clean energy on a broader scale. Solar panels for individual homes is a way to mitigate that but we are a long way from our government letting people be off the power grid in most locales.

Nuclear power is actually our cleanest option for large power plants right now even despite the fact it produces radioactive waste, because it produces huge amounts of electricity so consistently it doesn’t need to be stored, and because the chemical reaction does not burn into flames or produce greenhouse gases. There’s also a lot of research indicating that nuclear waste doesnt have the same adverse health effects as previously thought - a lot of studies indicate the crew who cleaned up Chernobyl were fine and did not develop long term illnesses, for example. So far the Fukushima meltdown has been far more of an infrastructure crisis than a health crisis as well. It’s not the same thing as nuclear fallout from a bomb.

I have researched this stuff quite a lot, I am an advocate for improving solar and wind but I’ve learned over time clean energy is a much more difficult puzzle to figure out than just “slap some solar panels on it”

literally the worst, in our apartment I have come across people throwing non broken down boxes down the recycling chute, and that gets stuck. which whatever, but people have continued to throw shit down there and even MORE gets stuck. this has happened numerous times and it is annoying. truly wild how lazy people are to not take 30 seconds to break a box down.

We’ve had a compost service for a couple years now and before we got our house, they would come out to our apartment to swap out our buckets. One time our super grumpy old lady neighbor saw me bringing in the new bucket and was like, “do you actually think you’re making a difference by composting?” That has always peeved me. The end.

One of my environmental pet peeves especially this time of year is raking and bagging leaves and putting it out with the trash. They just go to the dump and they burn it. Run your lawn mower over that shit and it’s a natural fertilizer!

    The rivalry is back on

That reminds me that I don’t have leaves to rake at this house and it’s so great

One of the things we really love about our house is that even though it’s right in the middle of suburbia we have so many trees surrounding us that when they are full of leaves you can’t even see any of the neighbors behind us and to the sides. The downside, leaves, leaves, leaves, leaves

We finally got a leaf blower so we could get them all on the lawn and just mow over them

is there an alternative to pizza boxes?

they can't be recycled, they're awkwardly shaped for trash cans, and my wife and i always argue about what the right way to dispose of them are.
