An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

I'd be very interested in one day hearing those demos lmao

I'm in the mood for upgrading my vinyl player, someone throw me an amazon listing for a reasonable one with a USB and I'll do 'em all.

Hahaha dude, I've seen TWY 15 times, which is the highest for me except for maybe Sparks the Rescue, being from Maine and all...and I didn't think I'd ever read anyone else write that statement :crylaugh: I only moved out of Maine last year, I have no idea how we don't know each other. Love TWY and I miss Sparks!

I digitised the Upsides/Suburbia reissue demos awhile back haven't shared them with anyone and i have the means to do Summer Clothes extended over the weekend.
Going back further i still want to hear the Sister Cities demo tape they sent out to fans

  9. I've got this too and it's also on my list to digitize. Maybe I'll actually get to it this weekend.

Always been a casual fan of TWY, but I can't stop listening to THGOF, I assume it's because I am a new father and there's just SOOO much to relate to here but IMO this is easily my favorite album by them, and one of my favorite albums of 2022.

This band has always been a bit hit or miss for me and “miss” in terms of enjoying what I’m hearing but not really connecting with it. And so far that’s been the case with Hum. Maybe that changes, but if not oh well, because I’m confident that they could come out with something in two years (or 6, or 8) that I once again super connect with and love.

In the meantime, I’m at the metaphorical TWY bus stop watching the bus go by with all of you cheering and singing on board with Hum while I wave and wait for the next album to pull up and maybe I get on that bus and my god what a strange analogy / example to come up with but I’m 13 drinks deep at a mediocre wedding so whatever lol

don't worry, we're not going to foreign, distant places. just to the sister city. hope to see you on the next bus!

jokes aside, i can definitely resonate with that. that's actually how i felt with NCTH during the first 2 years of its existence

Listened to both this and Sister Cities pretty much back-to-back today and I definitely still prefer SC by a considerable margin. I enjoy this a lot and would put it on before most of their other albums, but I do kind of wish they would have continued down that path a bit more with the new album

I will say that I was in a pretty miserable mood for most of the day and, as such, "Low Tide" finally hit all the way for me. Still don't particularly like the chorus, but I was definitely singing along to it earlier today haha

I don’t believe in guilty pleasures, but Low Tide’s chorus is the closest thing I can think of to one. I really don’t like it and wish the lyrics for it were pretty much anything else, but damn would I be lying if i said I didn’t bob my head and sing along

I do kind of agree. I do love it, and on paper it's probably their best work - as Dan says, it is the purest distillation of what TWY is and sounds like - just some of the tracks feel like they're a bit 'safe' or rooted in a particular pre-SC sound. Dan always critiqued NCTH for only being 'half a step forward' from TGG, and said they corrected that with SC - but for Hum, it feels intentional that they're not overthinking whether they take 'steps forward' or not; they've just made a record that sounds like TWY (which of course, is no bad thing). Half of the tracks feel like they could have been written 'before' Sister Cities (Wyatt, Oldest Daughter, Paris), and half feel like they could come after (Cardinals II, Songs About Death). The live set they're playing at the mo includes some of those 'more familiar sounding' songs; really hope "You're The Reason..." at least comes out for the UK run.

Think Hum has the most satisfying 'tie up' of an album though, in "You're The Reason...". It's an amazing song on its own two feet, but does an absolutely incredible job of tying up all the themes from the album, including some callbacks, and offering some form of resolution - all in just over 4min30, with no need to sprawl out into a 9minute song to accomplish that. Didn't think they'd top Funeral or Ocean, which try to do similar, but they did :)

I still don’t get people’s annoyance with the Low Tide chorus. It rules

Yeah, don't get the annoyance at all. It's also a huge sing along moment for live crowds already.

It’s a dumb line from someone who’s clearly capable of legitimately insightful lyricism. It sounds like an upsides era holdover
