Not counting singles the 3 I gravitate towards the most are The 1975, Looking For Somebody To Love, and Oh Caroline

 

If you need a breather from overplaying this, the Wild Pink album from today is a masterpiece

I think the 1975 on this album has my favorite matty lyrics ever particularly verse 2

Starting my second full listen, god I'm excited to get absorbed into this record

 

Hard to think of more, if any, songs like Happiness where the title and the feeling I get from them match up 100%

About You might be the best track on here. Wrap me up in the world that song sounds like.

 

I think Oh Caroline, Happiness, I'm In Love are my favourite tracks

But every song on this is an absolute crusher and something that could easily compete for my favourite on any given day. So it's hard so say this early on. All I know is I've loved this band forever, and this album is something special

 

Jesus Christ “Part of the Band” is SOMETHING. Just when you wonder if they’ve played every card they have

 

And then god DAMN IT “Oh Caroline”. The first time they’ve actually managed to channel the actual ‘80s rather than a cool neon idea of the ‘80s (which, to be clear, I also loved)

Particularly now that I know from the track-by-track that it's a breakup song, "The only time I feel I might get better is when we are together" cuts fucking deep. That line is really hitting me currently.

 

I liked Part of the Band when it was released but it’s absolutely essential 1975 now especially in context of the album

 

Oh man what the hell “Wintering”. How do they STILL have skills and tricks we haven’t heard?

 

This band truly swells emotions in me like no other band does. God I love them.

 

Man they really have a Justin Vernon-esque knack for working really interesting droning notes and little glitches and experimental flourishes around the edges of very emotionally satisfying chord structures. At the root, they may not be reinventing the wheel. But Christ they redesign it to look fucking stylish.

the guitars in the chorus of "oh caroline" call back to "settle down" big time, which has always been one of their best songs

 

When we get to voting for the best songs of the 2010s I think it’s #2 with a bullet. What a song

 

Current favorite little detail (among many): the “yeah yeah yeah” backing vocal on “I’m in Love with You”

 

Could connect this to She's American too. I'm sure someone has brought this up before, but I've always liked the symmetry of Settle Down/Robbers and She's American/Change of Heart on the first 2 records. Two different takes on the same pair of ideas
