I legit almost said he’s like the miz. Gets the job done, but never going to be a “work rate” darling. But he’s not jack Hager either

 

Even if its a wash in-ring (and Id say Bray is better), the ceiling for Bray's gimmick is so infinitely higher. In a way, The Miz has actually achieved everything humanly possible with his gimmick...the WM main event, the wife, the reality show, the IC title runs...he's overachieved if anything. The most interesting thing The Miz's gimmick has ever done is theoretically go full shoot on Daniel Bryan on Talking Smack...

Whereas Bray, we're having this entire discussion solely because of the potential of his character(s)

Like, did we ever discuss Taker's in-ring ability until he decided to go so comically past his prime that it got sad? Cause I bet if we compare say, Taker and Cena, Cena is leaps and bounds ahead in match ability. But the limits of Cena's gimmick force him to be a better in-ring wrestler

 

The Miz got stuck with that name in his 20’s and he kept that going longer than he had any right to.

We actually did discuss Taker’s ability (in a positive light) after his WM21 match with Orton. The guy was always known as an average worker until that point when he stepped up his game fairly late into his career. He had great matches with guys like Orton, Batista, and Edge, and they weren’t carry jobs either.

 

Angle vs Undertaker at No Way Out 2006 is one of the best matches of that era

 

And to clarify my earlier post, I didn't necessarily mean that Bray is a "bad worker", so much as his matches are often poorly structured, paced or booked - resulting in what I often found to be underwhelming matches. I don't necessarily put that at his feet, because I'd typically default to blame Vince booking, so I'll just say I'll give him the benefit of the doubt they'll learn to better combine his character with match booking/production. But I want to see evidence of that from the jump. I also recognize he worked a few of the WMs injured (if I remember correctly).

As someone else said, I do think he needs a better/different finisher, because it reminds me of too many others - and I'll forever associate it with previous characters of his (its name doesn't help that).

 

I think this is where Bray would have gotten if he hadnt always been booked to lose. Those Taker matches are good (hell, Im even thinking Taker/Brock, which were pretty solid), but a big chunk of it is his aura/character that he can work a certain way. Like, Rock/Hogan is a 2.5* wrestling match with a 7* aura. The crowd was completely behind him at WM33, even with the projections, and then just deflated when he lost

 

I think about how Moxley matches were paced and booked under VKM and look at him now with a competent booker

 

They definitely tried to do way too much with the gimmicky stuff in his matches for sure. He’s not the most amazing worker but he’s more than capable of having a good match when he’s allowed to. Most people don’t even remember the decent matches he’s had because the Orton and Rollins matches were so over the top, stupid, and memorable in the worst way.

 

I mean hell the shit he was able to pull off with Shawn in his Career/Streak matches were pretty remarkable as well

looking at tickets for Raw next Monday and I just want to reiterate how much I hate fees

Section 201, Row B, facing the entrance ramp: $20 (pretty good!) but with fees it's $39.90 (very bad)

 

This is actually the perfect example. Mox is another like, B+ dude in the ring. But his character in AEW is soooo crisp, he can just fit the match to what works best for him. Like, I know he can chain wrestle and out-technical someone (see: HHH at Roadblock), but, his characters at his best right now when its all physical brawling
