I thought this was just ok. Easily my least favorite of his shows so far.

Yeah there’s another scene in episode 7 where they reference a song that was released in 97 lol

I have to say this is incredibly disappointing. I love every other show he has done, but this just seems disjointed to me. A lot of the stories are bleh, it’s not unsettling or scary and I just don’t care that much about any of the kids.

All of his other shows were masterful at creating a unsettling, emotionally charged atmosphere. I want to like this, but I’m 7 episodes and just don’t really care about things that should be evoking more emotions given the subject matter. It’s also not scary or unsettling at all especially compared to Bly Manor which I just watched.

  4. idk i'm four in and this is still very much my shit. Maybe I have a soft spot for YA. Always did like how Flanagan wrote kids/teens. Ilonka giving major Abra Stone

I too am about four episodes in and while, yeah, I’d rate the quality of his other shows higher than this (Midnight Mass meant a great deal to me), I am still very much enjoying it. The stories the kids tell might not always be that scary, but I’ve appreciated how each one is a reflection of their own psyche. The spooky happenings at the hospice have gotten me a few times thus far as well. Ilonka’s dream of the hooded people in the hallway creeped me out, the shadowy figure with the red eyes in Anya’s room, that quick moment when Natsuki is walking past Tristan’s room and you see her ghost sitting up in bed (that’s one of my favorite aspects of Flanagan’s use of horror elements; when he just allows a figure to linger in the background or in passing as was often the case with Hill House), and when Ilonka gets left alone in the dark of the basement beneath the morgue. I always had a fear of the dark growing up and developed claustrophobia over the years, so any time a character is in the dark shuffling for a light and that’s all you can hear, it unnerves me. If I were to express a specific disappointment, I’d say I was a little let down that Anya’s “Two Danas” story ends with her only telling us that the Dana left alive in the end could feel the other one suffering in hell. Felt like that would have been interesting to see Dana realize that on screen.

Just watched the seventh episode, and while yeah this may not as a whole be as "masterful" as his other shows, I think the seventh episode of this is right up there with the respective fifth episodes of his other shows. Even when pulling something mind-bending, Flanagan always treats his characters with such care

Watched the first episode of this and I love how it deconstructs the jump scare by beating you to death with it.

Last episode didn't stick the landing but 7 was great and I stand by that. Weakest Flanagan show but still very good

I finished this last and ended up thinking it was just okay. I’ll probably check out another season, but I’m not as into it as I wanted it to be.

Bummer this doesn’t seem to be peoples’ favorite of Flanagan. I’m a few episodes in and it’s not captivating me like I’d hoped but it’s enjoyable enough to keep watching.

I am curious though, anyone know if it’s the same set as Hill House? The house looks very similar IMO.

    It's all hell.

This definitely peaked on episodes 7 and 8. The rest is ok, most of the stories just aren't anywhere near as interesting as the main plot and I think the show as a whole would have been better as a condensed mini-series?

Roll on The Fall of the House of Usher!

I really liked this. 7 and 8 were definitely the best episodes. I'd be into another season.

Ugh overall this sucked. The midnight stories were bad and the rest just didn’t add up to much.

kinda agree with the criticisms of ep 1 I've been seeing. the jumpscares feel rote and honestly dumb when cancer is so fucking scary already. I realise that's addressed in dialogue too but they still rely on the scares to prop up a lot of the episode so it just feels conflicted

not sure about the whole 'possible cure' story hook either. feels like it could get thoughtless and insensitive pretty quick

sticking with it though, Flanagan isn't exactly known for putting his best stuff in episode 1

Also a little weird since that song came out in 1997 and this is set in 1995 lol

Also I think I read somewhere that Kate and Hamish made cameos as background characters, but I didn't spot them myself

Edit: and Carla Gugino. I dont know if you can spot any of their faces anywhere but apparently they make voice cameos

for the most part I was enjoying this a lot and ready to call it underrated, but the ending definitely leaves you with a sour taste. very much feels like they just ran out of time to conclude the Mirror Man/Julia stuff and just punted it off to a prospective next season

a lot of stuff just feels very unsatisfying. end of episode 8 had me ready for a crazy twist that the old lady was controlling Kevin like Dusty and his mother, but I guess... not? what was the takeaway there? and why did a group of smart kids immediately dismiss the obvious ghost problem when like five of them separately had seen the shadow?? (my man Amesh with the deep cut X-Files reference though. loved him, favourite character by far)

also very annoyed that Kevin got a three-part story and Cherie didn't get to tell one. some absolute bullshit Flanagan
