I understand the almost holy status of Criterion, but the reality is that it is hard to keep the lights on releasing Frownland. It isn't really new, either. Armageddon had a Criterion release (here come the vulgar auteurists defending Michael Bay).

if anything releasing an animated movie owned by Disney is a huge sign that Fox titles will still be available for Criterion to release in the immediate future.

Criterion seems more popular than ever now thought, it's hard to believe they're that desperate for money.

All I can think about is getting a Criterion The Straight Story, and how close we are to a 4K David Lynch complete works set

Their mission statement is on the back of every release. I’d say Wall E fits the bill, it’s a great movie.

People get caught up on what they personally think Criterion is, many think they should only release hard to find foreign films, and they do, but again that’s not their mission statement. Important films, new and old, domestic and foreign, accessible and inaccessible. At the end of the day it’s about putting out a high quality product around a great movie.

I know one person in my adult life that knows what criterion is. At this point physical releases of movies are pretty niche, especially a boutique label like criterion. I get weird looks when I tell friends I collect blu rays and 4ks still.

That release is worth it for the commentary track alone.

Is that the one where Affleck seems drunk?

What would be the best Disney releases for a CC edition? Sleeping Beauty is a must.

Yep, plus you got an overly defensive Michael Bay and a sheepishly apologetic Jerry Bruckheimer. Bruce Willis is on it too but he’s totally on autopilot

I remember seeing the clip where Affleck mocks how stupid the idea is that they are going to train drillers to be astronauts because it is not easy to train astronauts to drill.

I think Fantasia and Pinocchio would be the top 2 on my list.

Just found out the 4K version of ‘In the Mood for Love’ is going to cinemas here. Showtimes start this weekend.

    Sweet.

Criterion Channel sent out a coupon for $10 which apparently means a flash sale is coming soon

And boy are they building an impressive backlog of Closet videos...

Sale is today. I’m picking up 5 I believe. I’m bummed Cure doesn’t come out until next week, so I’ll just pick that up during the BN sale.

I have about 10 on my short list…help me decide

    -Lost Highway
    -Fire Walk With Me
    -The New World
    -Time
    -Exotica
    -Chan is Missing
    -The Long Day Closes
    -The Piano Teacher
    -The Celebration
    -The Cremator
    -45 Years

My concern with the Lynch stuff is that I feel like a boxset is almost an inevitability at this point, nothing concret, just a hunch. I’ve seen everything here except Exotica, Chan is Missing and The Long Day Closes, I would like to buy at least 2 of those as blind buys are a lot of the fun.

Your logic is probably gonna keep me from picking up FWWM today, probably will be their first 4K boxset (considering theyve already done the actual restoration). I want to get the Three Colors trilogy so badly but also expect an eventual 4K release

All I have to add is The New World is a nice package with a directors cut.

Right now my tentative list is:

    Tampopo
Phoenix (Christian Petzold is a genius)
    Certified Copy
    Irma Vep
    Short Cuts

I’ll second Tampopo and Certified Copy, two of my favorites. I’m curious about Phoenix, but I couldn’t stand Undine, so I kind of bumped it down my watch list.
