So happy to finally have new John Fullbright! Felt longer than 8 years.

Yeah, I want some thoughts on the new Fullbright! I really love it. Review coming later. First three songs especially just knock me on my ass. "Stars" is an all-timer.

How's the Tyler Childers triple disc?

There are some songs I can't even tell what's different between the Jubilee and the Hallelejah, and then I can't even tell what's the same on the Joyful Noise. But mostly I'm just a little turned off that I paid $60 for what's basically five new Tyler Childers songs recorded two different ways + a third disc that I'll probably never play again.

Yeah, I mean I would have never paid for that unheard knowing the concept. What's the third disc's sound?

  12. Probably the best late career "comeback" record of all time and one of the best albums period too

Let me know if that playlist works dunno why it's not on Spotify

I'm really at a loss for how terrible Tyler Childers' album is. And I'm not one to get angsty if an album I was excited for ends up being a letdown. You hit the nail on the head in terms of what we got. Coming on the heels of an instrumental album, too. I can't imagine a lot of fans are happy. I guess he doesn't care? He'll keep playing packed venues, I'm sure. But it's a liiiiittle bit insulting we've gotten 6 new songs out of his last two albums. If he's just trying to get out of his record contract this is a pretty lame way of doing it.

I think the Childers record is an improvement over the last one, which I found to be pretty lacking aside from 2-3 songs. I get being frustrated by the triple album gimmick, but I don’t really feel shortchanged by it being a short album. What’s here is really strong, and the band plays the shit out of it.

Agree the 3 albums idea was just silly. I enjoy the album though, but I really love gospel music. I feel like the combination of the 3 albums and then ppl just not liking or being able to relate to the gospel direction has really given this album a very negative perception.

I'm also pretty confident that I'd call "Heart You've Been Tendin'" his best song since Purgatory.

I’m late for the Kenny Chesney talk. While a lot of his hits are the blueprint for the trash that floods playlists and country radio, they are also usually much better songs then the trash they inspired. Or maybe I’m just trying to rationalize the fact that I like plenty of Kennt’s hits.

Also I got back into the Zach Bryan album because of the recent Popcast episode. It still sucks that it’s so long but it also, in my opinion, still has some of the best stuff I have heard in a while on there.

Thank you for the recommendations! I only ended up going on Saturday afternoon, but I saw Waxahatchee, Tre Burt (who I’d never heard of before your rec), and Andy Shauf and all three were great!

On another note, listened to Lucinda Williams Car Wheels on a Gravel Road and Mark Knopfler/Emmylou Harris All the Roadrunning yesterday for the first time in a long time. Both great albums

Been super in the Zach Bryan album after not giving it a chance for a while. While it's hilariously long, and I'd love a focused 12-song album for him that he spends more time on, it's a fantastic "just throw it on during the workday and get lost in it for a while" collection of americana vibes.

Like the highs aren't that high (nothing touches the best songs of Childers or Isbell or his other influences), but there's no total duds either. Would never listen to it start to finish with 100% focus but I've really enjoyed shuffling through it this past week.

Speaking of Zach, great episode of the NYT Popcast about him out today/this week.

Nothing to rationalize. A lot of his early stuff is great.

This album burned me out on him. It's just too much... nothing stands out as good or bad. I feel like it's a great album to throw on when I'm camping and around the fire at night for 2 hours, with it in the background but not one to listen to just enjoy the album.

Feel like I remember seeing Anna Tivel’s name here before. The new album that came out this year is incredibly beautiful stuff. She is a top notch songwriter. Highly recommend.
