I don't think he was calling for preemptive nuclear strikes, I think he was calling for conventional strikes if it looks like Russia is going to use nukes on them. I don't think he is out of line at all, and I don't think the comments are dumb. His country is being annihilated, 4 year old children are being raped, thousands of children are being kidnapped, cities have been wiped off the face of the earth already, and the aggressor who is doing all of this to his country is regularly talking about using nuclear weapons on them making them more and more a normal part of the conversation. He's not out of line at all. NATO isn't going to listen and do what he is asking but he's not out of line for saying that. Russia needs to get the fuck out of his country.

I'm hoping Putin has more rational people around him that eventually make the smart choices for him and get him to remove all forces out of Ukraine, knowing how their conscripts are getting absolutely slaughtered, with no hope of getting adequate supplies to fight back in any meaningful manner

  10. Presumably you support similar strikes on the US for the same reasons?

if the US invaded another country today and was seriously posturing on using nukes on said country I think I would take virtually anything to stop it from happening

If we were openly talking about nuking people I wouldn't support statements like that but I wouldn't be surprised at all if people were making them. Sorta like how all of the articles I keep reading about North Korea frame it as if they're just now deciding to pop off some ballistic missiles over Japan for no reason whatsoever out of the blue.

  13. I mean, that happened in Korea, but okay good! Including if they were by Russia, a third party to the hypothetical conflict? Regardless, either way I would certainly prefer de-escalating measures before strikes. Imagine if we had just destroyed the missiles in Cuba.

it depends on who you’re considering the target audience….he needs to say things like this for his own countrymen, but both NATO and Russia are uhh not gonna take it well to say the least lol. And he should also use the word conventional so his words can’t be twisted as they have been

You seem to be assuming that kind of backchannel stuff isn’t happening or what Zelensky says is definitely gonna be what happens hah. A preemptive strike with conventional weapons is certainly one way to try and stop a nuclear strike but I don’t think anyone believes it should be option #1 or even a preferred option

Oh I definitely support de-escalation - this situation is insane and insanely dangerous for the entire world. I was just saying that in my opinion it wasn't at all surprising that Zelenskyy would say something like that right now given the situation he currently is in. I think Biden should be meeting with Putin in person not even just calling him on the phone, and that's not even happening. It's fucking stupid and irresponsible that those two aren't talking to each other.

I saw a bunch of people using that picture of Macron, the head of the EU, and the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan around a table to dunk on Russia and point out their slipping dominance, but I think that picture should be Putin, Zelenskyy, the EU guy and maybe Macron too.

At this point, unless the US/NATO say they're going to stop giving Zelensky western weapons, I don't see Zelensky accepting any deal that allows Putin to keep the Donbas or Crimea; Putin's genocidal crimes are too heavy by now for Zelensky to accept any kind of appeasement like that.

Ukraine is getting 22 more HIMARS soon - going to wreck absolute havoc all over the front

What he said is a little bit irresponsible, but this is coming at a time when many Russian leaders are just spouting off WILDLY irresponsible shit about nukes every day. It doesn't make him right, but it's stupid to me to be overly critical of something he said while the other side is constantly fucking spewing stuff that is exponentially more irresponsible and dangerous.

Crimea seems like the wild card to me. I fully agree about the Donbas, but Crimea seems like an absolute red line for Russia. Unfortunately, it seems like just as much of a red line for Ukraine right now too.

Yeah I get the feeling that Putin cares less about the Donbas, and more about Crimea; we see this now with how many forces he moved down south to protect Kherson, and how weak that made the east. The Donbas will fall first I think (librating Mariupol will be a huge prize for Zelensky), and then they'll all converge on Crimea, and then what happens at that point is anyone's guess

Zelenskyy, Putin, Michel & Macron around a table would be preferable to the idiocy that is happening right now, and I can see why Macron / NATO having a presence makes some sort of sense, but if I could wave a wand I would say Zelenskyy, Putin, Michel & Karl Nehammer around a table in Austria would be better. Lock the doors from the outside and only Nehammer can come out, the rest of them stay inside until they come up with something, kill each other, die of thirst or something.

Would a compromise that returns Crimea to Ukraine but creates a permanent lease for Russia with Sevastopal and maybe even some sort "DMZ" around a major highway leading to it from Russia?

He certainly doesn't seem to care about the northern part of the Donbas (weird considering capturing Luhansk was Russia's one big "victory" of the entire war), but I wonder if the land bridge to Crimea, as well as maintaining huge cities like Donetsk and Mariupol, will be more important for Putin as well, beyond simply keeping Crimea. Curious to see what happens if/when Ukraine crosses over the post-2014 borders as well
