Yeah, I think Putin digging in deeper by implementing the draft and doing the annexation raised the odds of this by quite a bit. The stakes get higher and higher for him, and we're going to get to the point where nukes are really his only option left outside of admitting defeat (and clearly he is willing escalate more before that happens, the question being where the breaking point is)

    Very scary stuff.

I don't even think it will be tactical nukes either, I think he will hit a city. Strong chance it would be Kyiv because of leadership, but I personally think Lviv is just as likely, if not moreso, in that it would be a huge warning to NATO, and about as close as you can get to striking NATO without just nuking Warsaw or Berlin or Brussels right off the bat. Also would have huge logistical impact on the war itself.

    A Nuclear Zugzwang?

This is probably the most compelling and even-handed argument I've read so far for trying to get both sides to the negotiating table right fucking now.

Circa 1990. Maybe this is the glory Putin will return Russia to. Micky and communism - brother in arms.

I don't see this lasting another 6 - 8 months at this rate. Putin is being incredibly incompetent and I don't see even hardline nationalist Russians putting up with another 6 - 8 months of it. He has a high probability of accidentally falling out of a window soon. I've heard window installation hasn't been at its peak since the beginning of the war.

Winter coming will surely make this interesting.

I'm sure Putin will be in a heated bunker with his wealthy friends while his foot soldiers are hungry, wounded, and freezing.

Who is the one making the nuke threats?

And this is a wild thought. Just hear me out…it’s a crazy concept, but….

Let the people of Ukraine decide. It’s their country. If they want to join NATO, if they want to join Russia. Whatever. It’s their decision and their autonomy to do whatever it is they desire with their own country.

That's literally the point of the tweet. That the people of Ukraine should be left alone, and not interfered with by the US or Russia. I don't want to die in a nuclear war because of a conflict between the respective ruling classes of the US and Russia.

Russia invaded mostly due to Putin being upset about Ukraine’s autonomy to join NATO if it desires.

Sure, the US shouldn’t have been influencing it based on them saying NATO would move an inch to the east. In the end, it’s Ukraine’s call to make, however. If they want to join then neither the US nor Russia should interfere. Not unless they were being forced to join.

  24. it's actually, by the way, not Ukraine's call to make. NATO determines who joins NATO. Ukraine can express a sovereign desire to join NATO but NATO can say no. no country has a right to join NATO.

Anyway, the US' instigation of Maidan is a large part of why Ukraine even has a leader who would express a desire to join NATO. Not very respectful of sovereignty

NATO shouldn't exist, it's not a defensive alliance, and it provoked this war rather than preventing it. It makes the world less safe, not more. If the people of Ukraine want to join a US-led military alliance, then fine, but obviously that's going to have consequences when your neighbour is Russia, just as Mexico would undoubtedly suffer severe consequences from the US if it joined a Russian-led military alliance. Look at how the US reacted when Khrushchev put nuclear-armed Soviet missiles on Cuba.

It's also worth nothing that Ukrainian democracy has been manipulated by the US.
