Definitely. Not defending that persons post, just a name that came to mind. I’m sure there’s a couple of others that got it too but of course they’re selective with who they let out of their contracts

    • Meltzer was told that WWE will “be ready” for any “Daddy Ass” chants that break out during the 25th Anniversary Celebration of D-Generation X that is planned for the Oct. 10 episode of Raw in New York City.

Imagine if tony loaned Billy Gunn to them tho knowing he’d be the most over in the ring at the moment

just googling it: andrade, shawn spears, toni storm all requested their releases from wwe and were all granted. it's certainly not common obviously and i never said it was, but it does happen. thanks for the complete vitriol over fucking nothing once again though.

I’d be calling triple h every day trying to get Billy Gunn in on that celebration.

Shawn Spears had zero push or momentum in WWE, Tony basically quit and was sparingly used and Andrade had a rumored huge contract and WWE was firing everyone during the pandemic. These examples aren’t really comparable to Black in AEW and are exceptions to the rule. For everyone wrestler that got a requested release there’s a ton others that were held to their contracts and forced to job/sit at home until the contract ran out. You said “quite a few” which made it sound common when it isn’t a common business practice at all in any form of sports/entertainment contracts.

I genuinely hate the idea that performers/athletes are required by the public to honor their contract, where that requirement doesn't extend to the team/brand.

Trust me, I don’t like it it at all, but unfortunately that’s the way the wrestling industry has been forever and it’s far worse than any other sports contract. I don’t see it changing anytime soon and it sucks. They shouldn’t be classified as independent contractors if they are tied down like this. At least AEW let’s their talent do a ton of independent work and make their money doing side hustles. Black has probably done pretty well doing meet/greets and all of the events he did with Prestige. Same with Swerve, Moxley, etc. A lot of them are doing great work with companies like DEFY, GCW, Warrior Wrestling, Wrestling Revolver, etc and it’s super cool to see.

Changing how contracts are done and releasing talent anyone they request is not a hill AEW wants to die on as WWE will undoubtedly take advantage if anyone of value is let go. It sucks to say, but if you don’t want to be tied down, don’t sign a 3-5 year deal in such a volatile industry.

They fired 100’s during a pandemic, but they are great because they let three people go who wanted out within the last three years lol

Fired many right after they picked up their lives and moved across the country because of WWE.

  12. Corbin hasn't been on TV in like a month - imagine if he shows up as "the white rabbit" but then Bray shows up to take him out lol

In the vein of this thread, Brodie Lee was left to rot for how many months when they tacked on the injury months to his contract.

Funny enough, Andrade is one of the few people I can think of that demanded his release and got it outright.

Would actually be kind of a wild outcome, but, I'd be down with that. He was one of the guys I immediately thought of when the report came out that AEW people with spouses in WWE might want out.

Would also be nice to see Dark Order actually win something

I actually think the WWE 90-day release policy, if it was either the wrestler or company that could activate it, would be a good standard for wrestling companies to follow. Someone cant just walk to another company with a belt, and it allows you to wrap up any story line they are involved in if needed. But also it avoids an Ali-type situation

It’s just such a fine line either way you look at it. People get mad when wrestlers/athletes ask for releases or trades. People get mad when the company fires well before the contract is up. Maybe the answer is short term contracts?

The main issue was that there was only one promotion that ran the game, WWE. Then AEW showed up and everyone wanted to be there, which made things one sided again in hindsight.
Now for the first time in 25 years you have strong, healthy competition between two organizations that truly want to take care of their talent.

It will take a bit to clean up from the past but ultimately I think wrestling is in the best shape for talent that it has ever been.

Understandably, some AEW talent want to go back to WWE and thats a great thing imo.
