I know I'm sipping on the haterade!! I just hate every song I've heard by them. Even that one song/melody 1d stole from them I was always like wow I dislike this song, glad it didn't make the record. When I learned it was a ripoff of the 1975 it all made sense lol!

I've seen you express your love of them before! I think it's awesome that so many people are passionate about them and they seemed to have struck a chord with so many, truly. Their music seems to help a lot of people so that makes me happy.

I really dislike him strongly as well. I don't think I've ever seen or read an interview from him where I didn't think less of him afterwards. Mostly because I find his personality condescending

if you think hes a POS read this please

Cover Story: The 1975 - MTV

He's fired up now. “And you know, I could be really, really concerned and want to appeal to the kind of crusty, liberal, North Londoner [audience]. But trust me. I’m telling you as a grown-up person: If you do what I do every single night, and you get the choice to play to that group of people or a bunch of screaming, younger girls who fucking love you, you’re going to choose that one. Because it means more. It means something to those people. And I’m not going to apologize for embracing this intense emotional investment that I get from people. Because — Because it’s a big deal.”

If you only pay attention to the tiny pocket of modern music where bands (understandably) churn out quick covers to try and keep their profile up and where youtube is flooded with amateurs trying to get noticed with other people's songs, I could maybe see the misguided opinion that covers aren't good, blanket and reductive as it is.

    But, like, learn something.

Just from late 60s, early 70s soul music, I could rattle off "Respect" by Aretha (universally ranked among the greatest songs ever made) or Al Green's "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" or one of the genre's definitive songs, "Song for You" by Donny Hathaway without even thinking hard.

Hell, you could tighten the microscope down to just Beatles covers in that genre and era and come out with greatness like Smokey Robinson and the Miracles doing "And I Love Her" or Aretha's "Let It Be" or Stevie Wonder's "We Can Work It Out"

i figured they meant modern day covers since the genre of rock was pretty much built on covers

I love cover songs, there are very few songs I can think of where I haven't heard a cover that I loved
I also disagree with the notion that there can be too many covers of a song, Hallelujah is a perfect song I don't care if literally every band plays it

Even then, it seems silly to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Tell me Ingrid Michaelson doesn't bring something crucial to "I Can't Help Falling in Love with You". Or even going the amateur route, that Mree didn't find something in "Blood" that Middle East couldn't bring out.

im with you, there are a ton of more modern covers that i love i just listed a good amount without really thinking about it. i think covers are just like any kind of music. some of it is good, some of it is bad, generalizing it is bad.

I thought I was done with "Hallelujah" covers, but then I heard The Honeycutters swing through it without treating it like a hymn and I was back on board again.

I don't listen to many modern covers admittedly, but I love the concept of someone taking a song they enjoy and being inspired to put their own take and spin on it to create something different and possibly get me to look at the song a different way. It's cool.

Brandi Carlile is probably my favorite recent one, but I'm sure you already know that she can make any song beautiful

Yeah pretty much. I do get the feeling of exhaustion with them lately, tbh, though. There are a lot of rushed, useless ones that don't bring anything distinctive. But I'll wade through dozens of those to hear Prince's cover of "A Case of You" or the like.

Sorry, clearly just hit a nerve. Just brought back arguments over and over and over on AP from people who said that Sinatra or Elvis or Joe Cocker or whoever else has no value because they didn't write their songs, etc.

    Fucking outstanding cover.

Oh yeah I saw her do that live back in 2005 when she opened for Ray Lamontagne and she can really deliver it with serious feeling.

However it was not the best cover of her set. That was easily "Sixty Years On" by Elton John
