Mad Season will always be mine. Besides being the first album of theirs I listened to in full, I just feel like it retains the post-grunge feel of the first album while still being more exploratory in their sound. And You Won't Be Mine is such a good closer.

I actually appreciate that Robby keeps getting songs on each album, as he was the original lead singer so it's nice for continuity reasons, and also it's just an interesting break between John songs. I like that they make that just as much an important part of their sound as anything else.

I love Mad Season too. The first three were all pretty formative albums for me, so they're all pretty close together in my rankings.

I get why they do it, I just usually find his songs to be pretty crummy on the later albums.

lol. Yeah, that song really put the screws to them.

Like their second album, The Greyest Of Blue Skies, is how I got introduced to them, and it's very near to my heart. And it's very much loud angsty nu-metal.

But then when One Thing from their self-titled took off, their very next album took a hard left turn into alternative rock, and it's pretty obvious that Paralyzer was the result of their label coaxing them into following trends. Not that it's a bad song, but it's very different from their previous output.

Anyway, their last album, Five Crooked Lines, seemed to be trying to marry their past with their present somewhat. They're still not back to their nu-metal days, but they've gotten relatively harder again, even as they continue to court alternative. Kind of like Blue October, actually.

It's not lost on me that I'm discussing all of my favorite bands under a thread titled "Bad Opinions".

Wouldn't say it's "legitimately" good but I enjoy the nostalgia of it all

I'll say it's legitimately good and they can put that on my goddamn tombstone. It'll be a weird fuckin' epitaph, but hey.

Matt Nathanson released one of the 4-5 best albums I've heard this year, so check it out if you missed it.

All those bands are so bland. I just can’t envision a scenario where I’m trying to decide what to listen to and I decide on James Blunt lol

I’m with you on Dizzy but wholeheartedly disagree on Gutterflower. After two albums of getting lapped by Rzeznik he finally made the leap up to their level. “Tucked Away” is one of the highlights of the record!

Finger Eleven in the same breath as Matt Nathanson is jaw-dropping

    They suck.

And yet “Drops of Jupiter” is amazing. I have decided this must be due entirely to the genius of Paul Buckmaster and his orchestral arrangements

I don’t know that I go amazing, but I thought I was the only person who thought this (if you’re only talking about the song). Could be the best answer I’ll ever have for “song you enjoy from band you hate.”

Though I guess I don’t really hate Meet Virginia either, not great but pretty average radio song for the time period.

Ive really tried on his songs since picking that record up on vinyl this past spring, and I just do not like them.

I like his Let Love In songs more, honestly. “Listen” is kind of cool.

I used to loathe “Drops of Jupiter,” but have come all the way around on it. Just this really unique mix of goofy and sentimental that works for me for some reason. Knowing what it’s about made me like it more.

I don’t hate Train, honestly. “Hey Soul Sister” is trash, but I like a good bit of those first three records, and the one they made with Butch Walker in 2012 ain’t bad either.
