Someone said all Weezer is the same quality but the truth is that all Weezer opinions are embarrassing. Like a shape-shifting murderous clown from Maine, the music of Rivers Cuomo identifies the worst musical taste in each of us, conforms to that personal weakness, and exploits it for its power.

 

I don't know if I agree with this take, but I absolutely love the idea of it, and want to subscribe to your newsletter.

“Get off on the pain” I fully expected to hate based on the title, and the lyrics are a bit cringe but man it rocks

 

This is true. Songs like “Where’s My Sex?” are just misunderstood genius. Rivers did go to Harvard after all.

 

I don’t like this. The whole SZNZ project feels like a competition Rivers is having with himself to find the grossest-sounding chord progressions.

Hard disagree haha. Spring is the best by virtue of being the only one I can remember more than one melody from (and Vivaldi wrote one of those!)

People can say what they will about Raditude, Hurley, Red, etc., but each song on those albums has a distinct identity. This project has reached Green Day trilogy levels of homogeny.

 

People who know about sound recording and production: what is it a rube like me is detecting when I hear a proper Weezer album and the songs sound like real songs with real instruments and when I listen to any of the SZNZ EPs and the songs sound like they were recorded by someone alone playing every instrument directly into a MacBook? These EPs sound neat/sterile/tinny/other words to try and describe a lack of quality that I think is usually there even on bad Weezer songs/records.

 

What this is great, every track is killer and the production is great

hell yeah, Run Raven Run uses one of my favourite demos from that time Rivers dropped like a million onto his website (Pacific Sunset from White era)

this is a fucking mess but it's way more fun than their last 3 releases combined, what a trip

 

Autumn is fine, probably my least favourite of these so far. I liked the last three songs.

Im digging this after a few songs - maybe the best of the 3, for me , at least.

 

Im listening to Rivers 'favourite sweater songs' show on XM radio. Interseting to hear his choices for music: Willow, Franz Ferdinand, Green Day....

 

This whole project has been so disappointing.

 

This might be my favorite of the EP's so far. It's just as messy as the first two EPs but in a much more appealing way - when Weezer is at its best imo.

 

Hmm. I'm wrapping up my first (only?!) listen right now and I'm not totally sure what to make of it. It's definitely still pretty bad, but I wonder if I'd be a little more positive on it if I weren't already so negative on SZNZ from the first two. I can't really get past the disjointedness in the song structures and the general half-assed sound of the production that have plagued this whole project and continue to show up here. And some of it is just weird and bad in general.

There are at least some signature Rivers melodies on this. First and last song might be good or at least in the ballpark.
