I don't even know what the scene is considered anymore. Doesn't it change with whoever is on the cover of alt press? It probably all revolves around doofus Radke.

I mean Jason Isbell, Ryan Adams, Bon Iver all have massive followings within this site, but they aren't considered the scene, right? Even closer to home, I don't think Brand New or TBS fall in that category anymore either.

I always thought absolutepunk had a firmer grasp on what is scene than alt press. Like, to me a scene band for a while was one that had their largest following on absolutepunk

Scene has always been one of those things I just recognize without explanation. Like the Supreme Courts opinion on porn haha.

The scene can also mean the local scene, which in kc is heavily influenced by "The scene".

Of course "scene" can also reference the "scene-kids" that haunted hot topics in the mid 2000's.

I also think scene is a good way to distinguish bands that are making great, amazing music That won't get the same recognization as pop musicians regardless of quality of music. And we can have a whole other conversation on that, but my AOTY and Runner up, Stage Four by Touche Amore and Goodness by The Hotelier aren't going to sell as much or be given as much attention as a Katy Perry, Beyonce or Kanye West album. There's a glass ceiling I guess.

I think thats right. Mike Shea really doesn't get it, and neither do his writers or cohorts (Lyman.) While there was a ton of crossover between the two sites, what made AP.net (and this) great is the commentary and wide array of music. But I think when I hear scene, I assume people are talking about those bands that get regular coverage on Alt Press.

Not sure how unpopular this is but blink-182's new album isn't very good. I love Skiba, liked +44, and I'm glad Tom is out, but this was a bad effort.

I'm leaning that way too. Not to say Mark isn't genuine but he sure does play it safe. I think he's also really easily influenced. I can't say I know what went on in that studio, but with the amount of dumb shit that showed up on that record, I can't believe he was alone in those decisions.

    Evolution not revolution

    The manufacture of cool

We live in a world where a very few, select list of artists are free to make millions while most more talented artists are destined to remain unknown. Why?

Well the truth is most of the world’s POP music is owned by a few vast corporations , like Sony for instance. Just see who owns the rights to any massive mainstream band and you start to see everything is a division of a division and the paper trail leads back to one of only like six Corporations. I stumbled on this when I was trying to get copy write clearance for a free remix CD I wanted to release and discovered whether it be “Pendulum”, “Katy Perry” or “KOL” it all falls into a few same pockets. Could this be the reason my radio only plays twenty songs all day and also the reason there only appears to be twenty Artists at any time, who are also simultaneously cameoing on each other’s records. The “ Artists ” would like you to believe they choose to work with each other and respect each other’s work but in truth it’s stone cold marketing, just putting to biggest current names together to maximise the hype. Artists like Will I Am talk about their “ Brand ” and not their music and why some songs are popular so they can replicate the formula and get another hit. Jesus! Also there are the unknown millionaires beneath the famous faces, the number of select big time producers making the same ringtone tepid beats which all though catchy have all the musical sustenance of a Big Mac. With exception of big production names like Guetta, Calvin Harris, Will I Am or Avicii, most of these select producer’s names are known only to the people in the industry and are constantly flicking between which ever current artist they are paired with.

I find it laughable when “Four Music” pauses from a run through of the current top 20 to show me a future hit and claim they “ think it’ll be a future hit ” but fail to mention they already know IT WILL BE because they intend to repeat play it till it is. The truth is there is so much money pumped into these tunes they can’t fail. So we see Rihanna and Selena Gomez writhe about it their underwear to what is basically just a backing track to softcore pornography. This is coupled with fake lesbians, sexy guys, people drinking and dancing round in every exploitive, expensive music videos all designed to create the image of hedonistic a life style which is out of reach of everyday people, a life style, which after working hard all week, seems like glorious escapism. Ironically though, those who do star in the videos, are actually living the life style denied to all their fans or at least this is the image they hope to cultivate.

And what is it these current favourite “ Artists ” are all singing about? Money, getting drunk and Honey’s at the club. Even when Jessie J sings “ It’s not about the money ” she does it from the platform of a expensive music video. Where is the voice of a world in deep trouble, where are the rappers with a mind and that are not just mere puppets obsessed with “bling ” culture and fucking! They don’t sell and why? Because everyone is so pissed off with how our world is at the moment they want escapism, not conflict, but the problem is one and the same. If you don’t address problems you can’t solve them. Where is the song writing when an Artist like “Lennon” who would craft a song and not just make a lyric work with the next word that rhymes conveniently. Hits wrote on the back of a “Whopper” wrapper!!! It’s the money, marketing and rotation play which make the hit. And this is again helped by the fact it’s all owned by the same few people. Extreme synergy in effect.

And what is the music?? “Lady Gaga”, “Katy Perry” and the like seem be self-obsessed and only really sell their music based on their own manicured image. Supposed “bands” like the vacuum wrapped “ Little Mix” and the hype machine that is/was “One Direction” seem to me to be little else but candy coated brain washing targeted at young girls – they even sell “One Direction” dolls, “Love Heart” sweets and stickers at my store. At least when “phony” Beatles mania bit the dust it had actually been based around great music! Elsewhere “Will I Am” and “PitBull’s” Lyrics would be laughed at by a 3 year old, other artists who can’t even sing but look pretty drown their vox in studio effects, rappers talk lazily with no flow over recycled lazy techno beats, and the only part of anyone’s music you remember is the hook they stole and sampled from a REAL past artist!! All to a background of women dressed like sex dolls and all of this pushed out during the day while children look on for role models and find Ke$ha singing an ode to dying young.

In short music television, and mainstream radio is killing music. And that’s if there’s even music involved at all and not just some tedious, spoiled reality stars!

There is a plus side to how things are now however. For instance mainly due to the net it is now possible for any band to set up its own net presence, market and manage their selves and sell direct to their people who are interested in your art. MP3s are best as most people just steam single tracks these days. Of course as it’s purely data, it cuts down on general consumption, ie no solid manufactured product which has to be good for a working green future. It does however degrade the art and the joy of listening to a whole album somewhat in my opinion at least. BUT you can reach the listeners and sites yourself now, get radio/podcast play, set up your own websites and Facebook pages, design your own art and merchandise, hunt down your own gigs and build up your own fan base as long as you’re dedicated and a little savvy.

The future of now has to be there will only be a very few huge corporate owned bands at any one point and countless millions of self-made bands with genuine talent with fan ships of only about 1000 or so dedicated fans who hang on every note and word. The truth is as things are now you don’t need a label, there’s nothing you can’t do your self – look at “Enter Shikari” Of course putting in a lot of time and a little money help too. Although due to piracy most of these indie artists and bands will never be able to quit their day jobs but that’s life I guess AND at least the passion is real!

When did my grandpa get on Chorus?

For real tho sounds like something my grandpa would say except he'd throw in something about those tattoo'd bands wanting attention and something something Roger Waters is the best. And would prob somehow work something about Dr. Phil in there.

Been idolizing popstars since childhood! I turned out kinda questionable but I'm sure it's unrelated!! There's more beyond sex and what u perceive as shallow! Even got my inspirational Brit card what what. I look at it when I'm feeling defeated and then get to Work Bitch!

Gosh that was long. Also, not anything new. Keep supporting who you love and whoever controls pop radio or whatever, doesn't really matter. Go buy the records you love and forget about the rest.

I also couldn't give a shit less about who wrote what or what's pop music or what isn't, or what corporation owns the song. If the song is good to me, the song is good to me. You don't have to break everything down and view it through such a specific lens.

Nothing at all. Having a critique of the music is fine and even not enjoying it is fine. But the people that do enjoy it, for whatever reason, aren't wrong. I never understood the whole "oh, you like pop music?" attitude. It's pretentious and annoying.
