No, it's weird. And the way you just framed it is exactly what's weird about it. It boils down to thinking of the players as property. Giannis, Luka, Jokic, and whoever are all adults who have the right to pursue their own passions in life. Yes, it sucks if Giannis gets injured paying for Greece and it ends up hindering his NBA career in some way, but it would also suck if he got hurt in a meaningless regular season game against the Kings. But Giannis knows the risk going into that and decides to play anyway. You don't own the team or pay him. You have no real stake in his health outside of "oh no my team might suck" if he gets hurt. Hell, it even comes off as gross when actual owners bitch about this stuff. They're people, not personal property.

And yes, I know there are national pressures that probably influence Giannis and other players to play as well. International players get a lot more heat for skipping national team play than guys do for skipping team USA. That shit sucks too. But ultimately, the players should be able to do what they want in the summer without fans getting all weird about it.

 

I think it’s important to remember that (I’m not saying this is something Giannis has said, maybe he has) for international players, playing and winning for their country with players from that country is more fruitful and fulfilling than an NBA title. I know Manu, Tony, Luka etc etc etc have all said this in some way or another.

 

I, for the record, do not claim ownership of any human being nba player or other.

 

I’m just glad he won’t get hurt

 

Super sus to talk like this these dudes potentially getting hurt representing their countries in the euros thereby missing out on the nba season is way worse than them getting hurt representing some billionaire and an American city they’ve lived in for a fraction of their life
