I know it’s not a perfect parallel, but i’m laughing thinking about what would happen if a weekend of NFL games got cancelled because Biden passed away. You’re most likely looking at another insurrection attempt lol.

Let me just say, when I was younger a far more racist word was used. It’s since fallen well out of favour

I’m from the same hometown as James Acaster and he recently spoke about a corner shop in town that sold alcohol to teenagers called Paul’s, which had a horrendous nickname. First time i’d thought about it in years but it was so normalised to be casually racist 20 years ago. You could definitely argue it still is, but there’s definitely been a change in the way language is used, particularly amongst the under 40’s.

I heard a man say the word you’re referring to recently and the room fell silent, whereas it was viewed as normal growing up.

Loving the overreactions from fans because games are being cancelled. Who gives a shit really? Don't particularly care about the royals but the Queen death is bigger than football, it was a given this would happen.

Games were cancelled when 9/11 happened too.

Getting my entertainment this weekend by reading Reddit's reaction to it.

So, honest question out of cultural curiosity not any sort of judgment. If you’re ordering Mexican food or Indian food or Thai would you say

    “I had a Mexican/Indian/Thai delivered” as well?

Yes, I would say that's normalised language here.

"I fancy a Chinese/ Indian/ etc. tonight" also, and in the context of restaurants - "We're going to the Italian in town if you fancy it".

  14. JM95

    hmmm

Yeah everyone understands you're just subbing out the word 'meal' or 'dinner' (or 'restaurant' in @AFoolsGlory's example).

Interesting, but makes sense. I got it from context, but reading it in that tweet made me go "oh wow, you could never say that here."

It's easy to think "oh it's just a game", but what about people that were attending the games? That booked time off work? That booked trains or planes or travel? Arranged child care? What about the staff working at the stadiums, likely on zero hours contracts who have just lost out on a shift and income during a cost of living crisis where people are having to decide between eating and heating?

There's a lot of context missing from thinking it's just about the round of Premier League fixtures. Aside from anything else, why is sport singled out? Why do the working classes have to work today, but apparently it's just too disrespectful for some football to be played?

Like most things in Britain, the cancelling on the football is symbolic of a much wider class issue. The contrast of how the majority of the country live, with the pomp and ceremony of the funeral and then coronation.

That doesn't touch what the cost of a funeral for her will likely be, which is ludicrous given the economic climate the world is in.

There’s also the issue of people in lower paid jobs who are now losing money in a massive cost of living crisis. People who work in club bars and shops generally aren’t doing so because they love the club. They need the money.

Pretty much yeah, saying “I got a Chinese delivered” Chinese is “short” for Chinese take away (take out to you) here. Same with fish and chips, we call them chippers. So if we got that it would be “got a chipper delivered”, Indian, Thai same thing.

  22. JM95

    hmmm

It's not though. There's a major royalist support among the working classes, definitely not across the board but certainly significant. The least royalist are almost exclusively in the major cities.

More relevantly to this though, no sports have an obligation to postpone games this weekend. They're not following a precedent or rule. Hence why other sports are going ahead this weekend. Some Friday games are changing to tomorrow but the relevant bodies are making their own decisions. The FA, Premier League and EFL have made their choice and I think they assumed other sports would follow too but they haven't. It's on them.

The class point was less about support for the Royals, and more about the decision makers and their attitudes to the working classes. That the decision makers in the FA, Premier League, Government have no regard for the working classes in the country or the issues they face.

Some football fans may not care about the games being cancelled because they love 'are Liz, but that's not to say that the issues are not relevant. Regardless of who made the decision, it's still symptomatic of wider issues of divide in our country.

"English football". I remember, I wanted to listen to the Leeds game on the radio.
