Someone on Reddit said they might grab a band from Music Midtown as it was the same weekend. FOB might be too big, but A Day To Remember maybe?

Riot really tends to replace acts of a similar ilk, so I'm not sure we'd see them bring in ADTR or even Fall Out Boy in this case. I might be missing an act or two, but in recent memory:

Rise Against for Faith No More (both "hard rock" acts)
Anthrax for Mr. Bungle (both "metal" acts)
The Flaming Lips for the Pixies (both "indie rock" acts)
Weezer for Blink-182 (both "poppy" rock acts with mainstream appeal; Weezer has a lot of pop-punk fans)

I'm excluding RTJ from this as I'm pretty sure they were the replacement for an unannounced Bauhaus... But yeah, I think we can probably expect something more in the darker gothy post-punk/new wave/general rock kind of area rather than somebody from pop-punk, hardcore, etc.

Phoebe would honestly not be a terrible fit as a replacement (though I don't actually think it'll happen).

I've been thinking about it. Even Slipknot replacing NIN, both Metal bands. Although NIN originally replaced MCR which kinda break the rule, but yeah probably they will bring something to appeal Bauhaus fans.

Yeah my first thought was Morrissey to appease the Bauhaus fans but Pixies or Tenacious D would be great.

Wu Tang replaced Die Antwoord in 2019, it really could be anything. I don't even like Bauhaus that much but I was excited to catch them cause I can't imagine being in a situation again where I'd have the chance to see them

if going by the close-enough-genrewise logic, i got bored on lunch break i started checking dates for any band i could think of that come to mind as suitable replacement in both size and genre
    violent femmes (out, date elsewhere)
    interpol (out, date elsewhere)
    Primus (out, in europe)
    pixies (possible)
faith no more/mr.bungle (who knows, but technically possible)
echo & the bunnymen (possible, probably not big enough)
killing joke (possible probably not big enough)
the breeders (possible, rare enough it could work)
my bloody valentine (nothing booked but not playing shows enough to suddenly be a replacement, but in theory are possible)
murder by death (will have just finished tour a few days before, possible, not sure if big enough)
flaming lips (in NY the day before, so possible)

after all that my money is on Tenacious D, with Lips being second, Pixies being 3rd

    Would Deftones work genrewise?

Yeah, NIN replacing MCR breaks the rule. But I would argue that was so far out and tied to a line-up announcement so... It kinda doesn't even count. I'm talking more "last-minute" (within 1-2 months of festival) replacements.

"Genre-wise," whether or not Deftones fit is debatable but "vibe-wise" it's definitely a match. Hah. I would love for them to be on, though it would be a wildcard if it happened.

Interesting list! A lot of artists I hadn't even thought of that could work (Violent Femmes, Echo, Breeders). I do think being a replacement gives a bit of wiggle room with set placement too... Meaning Killing Joke could still close that stage and it wouldn't be too far off, but if they were booked as a more standard act they'd be earlier in the day.

I'm doubting they go for the Flaming Lips as a replacement a second year in a row. If they wind up on there, I'd assume a number of other artists said no.

I find it ironic that in 2016 the three nightly headliners were The Misfits, Morrissey, and The Flaming Lips and now we’re talking about Morrissey or the Flaming Lips potentially closing a stage before The Misfits

Well, there we go. Hah! Bit out of left field, but I'll take it. Any chance that might be some weird holdover from last year? Not sure how FB works anymore.

EDIT: The fact that the one guy will already be there with LS Dunes adds some validity here. Similar thing happened with Anthrax/Bungle last year too, I think.

Too, Iggy Pop would be a fantastic replacement.

Coheed were meant to play No World For Tomorrow in full at Riot 2020. Now that is the 15th anniversary of the album it would be cool if they play it at the festival
