Finished Return of the King so I have officially seen the LOTR trilogy. Not much to say that hasn't already been said for years and years but damn what an amazing series this is, the visuals and effects are ageless and beautiful, the characters are perfectly cast and the action scenes are amazing. Can't believe I waited until I was 26 years old to watch this

My friend happened to have a Blu-Ray set of the Hobbit extended versions so I'll watch those too. Like I said I know they're not nearly as loved but I want more lol

The Hobbit movies are fine. Worth watching. But not great. Jackson came back into them at the last minute and nothing was delayed to give him time to truly do his thing. He had to use and go with things already in motion and I don’t think it was all planned out when he came in. This caused huge behind the scenes issues, I believe, and he did the best he could given the circumstances. The effects are not as effective here as they were in LOTR likely due to that rushed last minute aspect. When I first saw them there were multiple scenes where I immediately would go, “oh, that’s just all blue screen.” Like, of course they used blue screen but it wasn’t convincing in the way LOTR was. LOTR felt real, the effects were super effective. Here the effect took me out of the movie and lowered my enjoyment a little. I am pretty sure every Ork is CG in the hobbit. Where as I think the majority of the ones we focus on in LOTR is practical. My brain notices stuff like that and it effects how I am taking in the movie. None of this makes it a terrible film or anything, it just kind of lessens it all for me.

how much of the Hobbit movies is actually in the Hobbit book? genuine question. 40%?

  9. Can't be more than 25%. True disaster of a film.

Seeing good reviews for this show so far, excited to check it out tomorrow.

Like 90% of The Hobbit book is spread across those movies. A few (good) additions from the Silmarillion/Unfinished Tales. A lot of bad additions from the ether.

i only saw the first Hobbit movie but it handily fit the “movies as theme park rides” or whatever that criticism is. its barely a movie other than a series of setpieces and deus ex machina plot devices over and over at a break neck pace.

It’s fine. I don’t really like the random GoPro shots though.

maybe two movies at most. I know they wanted Legalos but nix that whole story, give me the Gandalf/white council bits, and give me two hour and 40 minute movies and we’re good. End the first movie as they get to Erebor and then the second movie is half bilbo and Smaug, half battle of the 5 armies

The most positive thing that I can say about Peter Jackson's Hobbit movies is that I don't think he / they ever figured out what to do for The Battle of Five Armies - not the movie itself, but the actual battle in the story - and it really undercuts the entire trilogy, because that point of the story is approaching the ending and should be emotional and resonant and instead it's like a random clusterf--- of CGI nonsense.

If you watch the BTS stuff, they straight up say that they had no idea what to do for the battle and just sent a bunch of units out to shoot random battle shots that they hoped they could use in some way later, with the plan being that they'd hopefully figure out what they wanted to do later. I really don't think PJ or anyone else ever 'figured out' what they wanted to do, and it really plays like they just slapped together footage that they had to try to make a battle. Obviously it all looks finished* because they are some of the best technicians all across the board and a lot of money was spent, but the story completely falls apart at that point and things just start to happen. The dwarves get all of their armor on and get all geared up for battle but then take it all off before they charge out of the gate...? That's just one silly little example but it's all just stuff like that happening all over the place at random.

This is my main critique of what I think killed these particular films telling the story this way. There are other HUGE major decisions that I think crippled the movies from the start - taking the focus off of The Hobbit in The Hobbit movies, completely and utterly side-lining the dwarves, shooting at 48 fps, etc etc etc - but even if I try to give these bloated, overlong versions a chance, it always all falls apart during the third film.

    * The third film especially has a lot of shots that I found it hard to believe were looked at as finished and up to par for a blockbuster of that budget. The ones that jump to mind most are when the armies are gathering in front of the mountain and the backgrounds look very wonky, everything has this weird haze as if to hide the rushed VFX, and things slipped though like all of the elves looking EXACTLY the same, even towards the front like directly in front of the camera, so-to-speak.

Watched the first Hobbit movie and thought it was good but not great. Definitely a noticeably different feel, a lot more lighthearted/family friendly, and obviously a lot more CGI and green screen than practical effects but I actually still thought the movie was gorgeous to look at. I enjoyed my time with it overall as someone who read the book once in eighth grade and never again, although all of the songs were kind of weird and took me out of it

I have to say that is also more or less how you could describe the book compared to the LotR books, apart from the visuals, so maybe they actually nailed it

Looks like critics were given the first two episodes. They're all pretty positive, too.

TBH "stunning visuals with an near incomprehensible plot" is what i'm going into this expecting anyway, so hearing it's a beautiful mess isn't really disconcerting to me.

I think the first two hobbit movies are fine. The third is terrible though. I have no desire to revisit any of them.
