Just completed my first run through of As Dusk Falls. Absolutely loved the story and after completing I was interested in what other people's paths were. They seem to differ quite a lot, and at the time some small choices, create big differences. I love how at the end of each chapter it shows your path, the blank various paths that could have happened, and the percentage of people following your path. By the end of the game some of my choices were only like 5%-10% of the population.

I thought my wife would enjoy watching me play, but she didn't have the patience for the art style. In short spurts I can see why people wouldn't like the style, but I think it worked really well as they could focus a scene's emotion with the dialog. It was like I was playing a comic book.

Overall, great game if you enjoy story driven games.

Doesn’t that have a multiplayer element to it? That would make Quantic Dream games much better if they had that (probably not).

  5. Anyone ever play this game I keep getting ads for on this site? Looks hard

  6. 8Doors update, I have beaten all the optional bosses needed for the good ending and collected all the mirror fragments for the true ending! Now to actually finish the game, just one more boss area to go.

Some of the optional bosses were annoyingly difficult. But that high you get when you finally beat them. Akin to Hollow Knight. Except the save points are close and actually make sense and you don't die just getting to the boss.

But idk, it got me thinking, aside from the difficulty, aren't Soulsborne games just glorified Metroidvanias? I don't mean that as a bad thing, either, I love Metroidvanias. Isn't Hollow Knight also considered a Souls-like? I bought Dark Souls on sale a long time ago, but I've been so intimidated by the genre's infamous difficulty level, maybe if I gave it a fair shot I might actually like it. Or I might get so frustrated I'd drop it haha

I haven't played Dark Souls, but Elden Ring very much has Metroidvania concepts baked into it. Areas gated off that require items to proceed; sequence breaking possibilities that can decimate entire sidequests...

I would very much hesitate to call it a Metroidvania though. Besides the fact that it doesn't have tools that you use to explore your environment, it's got a lot of different mechanics from genres incorporated into its design: platformers, RPGs, open-world. It's all just part of what makes the game.

I imagine Dark Souls is the exact same way. I wouldn't call everything that has Metroidvania elements a Metroidvania.

To me, a true Metroidvania allows you to slowly upgrade your character with actual tools and gear that make it more possible to explore your environment and open up new pathways to progression.

  8. Hm yeah you're right there's definitely a distinct difference between metroidvania and open world

There is an argument for and against Dark Souls having similarities to a metroidvania. Dark Souls, unlike Elden Ring, gives you full freedom to go anywhere you want in any order. Is there an order to make your life A LOT easier? Absolutely, BUT you can go back when you are a higher level and get that item you may have missed, optional or not.

i will say having played hollow knight made me get the hang of how things worked in elden ring pretty quickly. it was my first from game and i was expecting to be so lost and get destroyed but my hollow knight experience def took me a long way.

Diving back into Ghost of Tsushima but this will probably only last a week because of TLOU remake.

I started TLOU last year but got a little stuck and hadn’t gone back. I did not have PlayStation since PS2 so it’ll be my first full playthrough of TLOU.

I definitely want to come back and finish Ghost at some point but it might take a while with GOW Ragnarok coming out in a couple months too.

soul hackers 2 first impressions: pretty dang good. super straightforward smt experience, a nice middle-ground between casual persona and traditional smt mainline.
