Listening to the new tracks. Although I enjoy them and the vibe they’re going for, I just can’t help but imagine where these songs would’ve ended up if Sam Pura was a part of this.

If you ask me, that dude was practically their Jerry Finn on Mother Nature. And I’m not saying that lightly. I find it rare that bands make a strong creative connection with someone behind the scenes that shapes a band’s sound.

I’m always excited for new TDS. I doubt it’ll top Mother Nature for me but that’s my favorite from them. Even a solid album from them will be something I enjoy.

The first half had me pleasantly surprised but I have to echo Craig’s sentiment: a lot of clunkers on the second half. And aside from some of his weakest lyrics, his delivery sounds pretty sloppy to me on some of these tracks.

  4. This record has some of the weakest tracks they’ve ever done imo.

it’s not bad but after a few listens it would be right at the bottom of their discog to me

First listen all the way through, I really did enjoy it but the sequencing does seem like an odd choice. It starts "heavier" like the TDS we all know and it slowly slows down to a straightaway of midtempo numbers and never really picks up again outside of Wide Open which struck me as kind of noisy and not too melodic. The first 6 songs are amazing.

I was left with it feeling like an EP for some reason. Maybe because I already knew 4 songs. Hopefully it'll grow on me and feel like a full fledged album. Definitely some great songs.

Also the one song was so great but not sure about the section with him singing in a different language in the choruses..

Overall Solid and some really high moments, but something felt uneven with it all. Should have spread out the heavier songs

TDS isn’t a revolutionary band to me, so I don’t mind quantity over the perception that quality happens over time.

If they are pumped for these songs, write, record and release and live them. I think it’s cool they already found inspiration to write and record again.

I’ll listen to the record tomorrow and I hope I like it (still like the singe Coming Home and Sideways seemed good after one listen). Some bands need time with their craft, and other can hammer though. And if you don’t like a new record at least something new isn’t too far off (plus they’ve released side projects and Ep’s).

For me this one falls flat the most in the middle, and I don’t think this disorganized rollout helped since there was little excitement since the first 3 tracks have already been out.

that being said while I’m certainly in the “Mother Nature set such a high bar”/give me those bridges camp there’s still some cool stuff on here. I personally think wide open is pretty rad despite a lot going on.

In any event we’ll probably have another album in our hands by spring / early summer with it already being recorded, so here’s hoping with all the dust settled from the Rude deal that they’re a bit more selective & organized with the next rollout

This is the thing for me: I really think they could have taken these songs and made them into something special with a producer who was willing to push them or be an active collaborator in the process. I know nothing about Will Beasley, but it does not sound like he was that person.

Did anyone catch the melody of the verse of Dimensional Love is very similar to the verse of Consequence of Living from Mother Nature? I A/B'd them to check and they definitely are similar melodies

I don't see myself coming back to this album again anytime soon. Shame, as the title track is so good, but everything else is so forgettable.

    They're already working on a follow-up, fyi.

Should've just worked on this one longer

This exactly, I remember getting the most blink-like feeling from the production on Mother Nature, it was quite odd and interesting! On this one there's one good version of an AVA song though hahh.

I was hyped for the album, "Chance to know..." is amazing, I'll definitely be getting back to it, but why did they plunk down by the end of the first half with that acoustic song, so badly placed and not too strong and there's so many other moments later on that could've been something more. The Spanish chours in another one doesn't work for me either, sounds forced, but maybe I'll get used to it. Listened to it more than twice already and I'm too familiar with the singles, some of the lyrics are still bad, but I'll have something to return to (same situation as with the EP, where Fuck Them All was one of my favorite songs that year I think).

  15. "Wide Open" rules. I got a chance to hear this once a few months ago and "the less I hold the more I resonate" has been in my head since.

Yeah this song is the highlight of the second half of the record for me, love the chaotic rhythm and the pause at the end hits hard.

"Wide Open" reminds me of the good stuff from Golden Record. Definitely a highlight.

I posted this yesterday before everyone had access to the songs.. can anyone listen to the first verse of both of these songs and tell me if they feel the melodies are quite similar?

Finished my first listen. Wide Open is definitely the album highlight, followed by Dimensional Love and Sideways.

By no means is this a bad album, but just a bit middle of the road for them. There are few songs where it felt like it was building up to a huge bridge/ending, but instead just repeats itself and ends.

I’m halfway through and have enjoyed every track. I thought based on comments this wouldn’t be that good.

I do understand the lack of magic that Mother Nature had. The opening voicemail into Blind Ambition captured me instantly.

EDIT: this Spanish chorus is weird as fuck lol

“Wide Open” is really cool, but very little else is doing anything for me. I had really hoped the singles worked better for me in context, but I still find them to be mostly uninteresting. Feels pretty easy to say this will settle at the bottom of my album rankings, with a pretty sizable gap.

I’m glad they seem so proud of it, that’s really all that matters. Just bummed that they may not necessarily be for me anymore.

I'm digging Wide Open but the mix sounds way muddier to me than the other tracks. Vocals lowest volume they are on the album.

begging them to stop with the slower songs. it's just not in their wheelhouse at all. Some great songs but the album draaags in the middle
