Also, I probably shouldn't even be saying that hahh, but Purple Rain doesn't hit me all that hard, I like it and respect it a ton, but it's probably cause of a different background or something, as a kid I would only hear the titular song or even only snippets of it. I relistened to it yesterday due to all the high praise in here and I'm listening to it right now at work, and I understand it - would be hard for me to choose if I didn't vote with my heart only, meaning subjectively I can clearly see myself going back to Jimmy Eat World every single week of my life, whereas with Prince it's a different story.

I'd need to go back to that Menzingers album too to see what you're talking about, I remember liking it a lot as far as the sound goes.

Purple Rain the song is great, but a little overplayed and maybe a little overrated. However, on some days you might catch me calling I Would Die 4 U the greatest song of all time.

Purple Rain should easily win this, but it won't it seems.

It's got this really echoey sound to it that a lot of people did not like at all. I felt like it suited the wanderlust spirit of the songs.

I could hear "Purple Rain" every day for the rest of my life and never get tired of it.

I don't disagree, I don't mean "overplayed" as in I can't hear it anymore, but as in I think people rank it higher than many other Prince songs because they have heard it so much. Like I said it is great regardless.

Vindicated is from before Gilmore got involved and released almost 2 years before the album came out, and then only a pregap song at first when the album came out.

No way that song blows up if it stayed the same as the original acoustic and piano number it was, but damn if that version isn't better.

Also if we’re talking Eric valentine, I just wanna bitch about how his drums sound like cardboard.

also also, can’t remember what song, but the obvious auto-tune weirdness on Three Cheers def takes it out of the “excellently produced” camp for me

No, it's definitely Gilmore. He's listed as the producer, mixer, and engineer for "Vindicated" on the Discogs page (Dashboard Confessional - Vindicated) and is in the credits on AllMusic for the Spider-Man 2 soundtrack while Norton is not (https://www.allmusic.com/album/spider-man-2-original-soundtrack--mw0000209727/credits).

Thinking we're not talking about the same song here? Do you mean "Don't Wait" or "Stolen"? "Dusk and Summer" the song never blew up in any capacity, and the album version is acoustic guitar and voice.

I was pulling it from Wiki, which credits Norton, but looks like they took it from the single which had Hands Down on it as well so they gave him credit on all 3 songs.

I was talking about Vindicated original state as acoustic and piano.

Ah, well, I'll disagree on the latter point. "Vindicated" really needs all the drama and full-throated angst of the huge, arena rock version to work. The massive, outsized emotion of that song is what makes it go, both in the movie and in general.

Futures is very well-produced. It’s just not my preferred sound for Jimmy Eat World. It’s still an excellent record, they’re just a great band so they’ve topped it a few times for me.

“Purple Rain” may be constantly praised and played, but it never loses any shine for me (unless the radio station cuts it short). The guitar solo is just ripped right out of his guts and the wordless vocal at the end is the moth cathartic moment in the history of popular music for my money.

And @Craig Manning I agree about the Super Bowl performance. The marching band horns add such a special dimension to it. Like the USC marching band on the version of “Don’t Stop” from The Dance

The marching band, the downpour, the guitar, the silhouette, the part where he knocks over the mic…all magic.

Halfway through 3 Cheers and never really paid attention how everything just kinda blends together.

I think it's a testament to the songwriting

I haven’t listened to Three Cheers in a while but I know The Black Parade is produced pretty densely

Kinda sucks that this poll has like 15 more voters than the other three. I really fuck with Futures but it feels like Prince is getting robbed

edit: been really torn between these two all week, but I think this pushed me to Purple Rain

The production on Three Cheers is one of the reasons it’s a tough sell for me. Not a great sounding record
