I love Gaslight and the 59 Sound, but GKMC is an all-time favorite. This was an easy choice for me.

little over an hour left, but it seems good enough to call. The Gaslight Anthem's The '59 Sound wins with 53% of the vote and moves onto the Round of 16.

what goddamn rock are you living under calling good kid mAAd City mid tier lol. It’s like one of the most universally praised hiphop albums of the past 20 years.

    fucking embarrassing.

Lol did you break a 3 year posting hiatus to go to bat for maybe his worst album? What’s so good about it that puts it so far above any other album? In your own words, not citing Metacritic or some shit that I don’t care about

I really love GKMC, it’s a great album that really puts you in a time and place. Artistically it’s beautifully executed in what it sets out to do. I think it’s long earned it’s classic status, there is really no question about that.

I genuinely think my problem is that I find Kendrick pretty annoying. Like, nu-Eminem annoying. And TPAB is the one album where his genius really rises above that

Easily the best song on this album. Love that one

I mean, I didn't vote for it but I'm happy to make the argument for why you should give it another listen. good kid, m.A.A.d city is a classic hip hop album because it seamlessly integrates world-class rapping with front-to-back great songs, all structured in perhaps the tightest concept album ever for mainstream rap. In its film-quality narrative, there a number of incredibly clever choices that pay homage to his West Coast upbringing while simultaneously summarizing where his worldview comes from. It's vivid but technical, ambitious but easy to throw on, and perhaps the most successful example of a hip hop artist using their "debut" to build their own myth in the last decade.

I really don’t find the songs to be good, I don’t know what to say. I don’t like the way he crafts choruses on it, I find some vocal choices annoying, the beats aren’t impressive and I don’t find the narrative compelling enough to excuse the musical elements I dislike.

It kinda comes down to him doing the songwriting/pop whatever elements better on Section 80, and him blowing everything else out of the water on TPAB. This one is just middle of the road, even just in his discography

Hard to agree with anything you've said about the album

I mean without listening to the album in a number of years I’m confident that Section 80 has the better hooks/beats and that TPAB is better conceptually, lyrically, musically. If AP still existed you could read my fresh thoughts on it where I went into detail

If you think Section 80 has better... anything than GKMC, we're just fundamentally different listeners.
