the self harm lyric in something about Maggie is disgusting, includes no trigger warning or anything and threw me off the entire record

genuinely, how do you expect a trigger warning to be conveyed in the context of an album?

Not to condone self-harm lyrics but we’re on a website that talks daily about a genre/scene that has a history filled with self-harm lyrics.

I’m not sure, it’s just someone who’s a survivor of this made me feel sick when I heard it, I’m not sure how others will feel about that line, since it was so abrupt. But it personally made me feel a bit icky

Listening to Viva Las Vengeance now. My initial impression: I feel like the 'oversinging' or straining/out-of-tune criticism is overblown. I've had no issues with his vocal performance at all. Whether or not this is an album I enjoy remains to be seen. I'm only about halfway through it. I just wanted to comment on the vocals while I'm in the moment.

  8. He’s very much out of tune. This is … not good.

If it weren't for the vocals, I would like this a lot more. That being said, there are some really cool things going on in songs like God Killed Rock and Roll, Say It Louder, and Something About Maggie. It's a shame this is the one album he really overdoes it with the singing.

  11. Not sure it’s FOAM, but it’s close to that last Bleachers album of a total swing a miss … some baffling “are you trying to make this sound … bad” moments. The songwriters I know on this are soooo much better than this.

I thought this was a lot of fun. I’m gonna need to listen more to decide if it will be fun for a couple weeks or something that sticks with me, but I had a mostly positive first impression. His voice doesn’t sound much different to me but I’ll admit I’m not real picky about vocals. Excited to listen more tomorrow

The only panic album I’ve ever really liked is the first one so I’m no super fan but he sounds fine to me on this new album? Maybe I just don’t have an ear for this stuff but I’m not hearing him being out of tune at all.

The verses of star spangled banger remind me of the boys are back in town by thin lizzy sped up.

I wanted to finish my runthrough before the new one because I only got one album short lol, just listened to Pray for the Wicked

I respect that it has massive, massive hits on it and I like a good chunk of the songs but it is also clearly their/his weakest album to me

    So for me

    Vices and Virtues
A Fever You Can't Sweat Out
    Pretty Odd
    Death of a Bachelor
    Too Weird to Live
    Pray for the Wicked

But I think it's a very consistent discography and I like all of the albums to some degree

I really enjoyed the album more than I was expecting to. There’s definitely songs on here that I think I will be returning to frequently.

Viva Las Vengeance, Star Spangled Banger, God saved rock and roll, and Something about Maggie were the standout tracks after one listen.

I appreciate the Elvis Costello vibes, but this album is a giant swing and a miss. By far my worst experience with a Panic album on first listen.

Here is my live reaction because I know everyone cares and will read this whole post

Viva Las Vengeance: I forgot that I actually really liked this song after the singles that followed it lmao. Super fun song

Middle of a Breakup: This song is still an absolute mess. Probably one of the worst Panic songs ever, if not the worst

Don't Let the Light Go Out: I really like this song. The chorus and verse melodies are both really nice and the guitar solo part is cool

Local God: Also still a miss for me. Works a little better in context I guess but I still think it sounds like the chorus and the rest of the song are from different songs

Star Spangled Banger: I don't know exactly what he was going for here. Like a mix of Billy Joel and SR&R era FOB? Doesn't really work for me on first listen but I don't hate it. He's still singing way too hard on every song on here

God Killed Rock and Roll: I really liked this at first but the chorus was super disappointing, it needed to be a lot stronger, the little lines he throws in between him saying the song title flow weird to me. Again, the vocals are too much

Say It Louder: I'm gonna just accept that he oversings every song on the album and try to judge without considering that lol. I actually really like this one, great chorus and I like the subtle keys

Sugar Soaker: Not sure about these lyrics but another super strong chorus, definitely one of the stronger ones so far. Getting some real showtune vibes from this album

Something About Maggie: Really catchy, I like this one a lot (besides the unnecessary high ass notes in the chorus, okay that's the actual last time I'm complaining about it)

Sad Clown: What the fuck is this lmao, I think I absolutely love it? Feels like he really nails the over the top campy Broadway vibe he's going for on this one, the way he says "your majesty's magnificent, my tragedy is imminent" is 10/10. This is my favorite so far but I could see other people absolutely hating it

All by Yourself: Feels like the most subtle song on the album but I like it quite a bit

Do It to Death: This song has a cool Queen-ish feel, I like this one a lot too. Ending is pretty damn cool

Biggest complaint about this album is easily the vocals, like I expected from the singles. Someone needs to tell Brendon that we know he can sing, he doesn't need to stretch his voice so fucking much all the time. A little subtlety goes a long way. What happened to that amazing range he showed on the title track of DOAB for example? The high notes in that song are special because he absolutely nails the lower register too. When he just goes all high all the time it can get really grating. Once I put that aside though and just accept that's how he decided to approach this album I can ease myself into the songs more.

The second half is CONSIDERABLY better than the first half. On the first half, the title track and Don't Let the Light are good songs but the rest of them are some of his weakest material maybe ever. I don't know why he thought it would be a good idea to make Breakup and Local God the singles (or to make Breakup at all). Starting with Say It Louder I started really enjoying it though, already putting it above PFTW probably. I do like the vibe he's going for and I think he pulls it off. Could definitely see the album as a whole growing on me, I already kinda find myself wanting to listen to it again

    Favorites off first listen:

    Sad Clown
Don't Let the Light Go Out
    Do It to Death
    Something About Maggie
    Say It Louder
