Eh, imo this thing is a piece of crap so I can’t hate on the negativity or the score. I could do without the Pinkerton moralizing - it’s a really immature worldview in a lot of places, but I feel like it’s OK that it exists as a time capsule of 1996 Rivers even if that’s not a person that fully holds up to the standards of adulthood or 2022.

p4k has also gone pretty chill on the condescension since conde naste too so I almost revel in them bringing it back from time to time.

Eh, I'll put it like this. I've read Pitchfork reviews I've enjoyed, but I've never read one I liked.

The review of the Wire demos the other day was good

    Wire: Not About to Die

Probably because it isn’t a salvo in some myopic alt-rock canon war

I was looking forward to them, but I am not feeling either of the season EPs and that p4k review lays into them hard. Why have someone who doesn't even like weezer or have any interest in them write the review? Seems a little over the top, but whatever.

Putting aside that Pitchfork sucks, this is something I've wondered for quite some time about reviews in general.

I don't see the point of having someone with zero interest in a product be the one to review it.

I get that a fan might be more inclined to be forgiving, but more often than not fans can be obnoxiously critical themselves, and in the end, I'd rather hear feedback from someone with a vested interest than someone who couldn't give a rat's ass.

  8. Z Tapes (DIY French record label) put out a big Weezer tribute comp today.

My band frick did “Don’t Let Go” for it.

    Give what you can.

Brian Bell has been doing a ton of guitar play throughs on his IG over the last couple weeks. Everything from the new Sznz stuff to the obscure b-sides from the 90's and early 00's. Good follow if you're into that kinda thing.

Here in NYC the hype was high for this residency. Everyone I knew was talking about it. Then it went on sale and saw that tickets ranged from $115-$350 BEFORE fees….for Weezer….during a recession….

I love them and rarely miss when they come to town, but I don’t think Ive ever paid more than $60 to see them

This whole idea was flawed from the start:

    - Why would people buy a ticket for night 3 or night 4 given that neither of these EP's had been released
    - Tickets starting at $150-200 for this is ridiculous. I understand that the overhead for a Broadway theater (rental, union workers, etc) might be more than your typical show, seriously, this band has been to the city many times in the past 10 years so it's not like it was that rare of a get
    - Spreading the EP's out over 4 nights was also dumb. They're each only 20 min long. Do 2 EP's a night PLUS a fan favorite/greatest hits set.
    - Incentivize people to go multiple nights by offering discounts. To the above point. Maybe a ticket for 1 night is $125 + fees but one for two nights can be $175 + fees

Net/net I don't think it was greed so much as they may have invested heavily in a production and not realized the costs of putting on stuff on Broadway but, damn, a band that just co-headlined a stadium can't even fill an 800-seat theater in the biggest market in the world.

I feel bad for the non-rich people that had travel plans and hotels with the intention of seeing the shows. Really dumb decision on Weezer’s part.

It's still NYC so plenty of other stuff to do.

Not surprised and while I feel for the fans that are getting screwed here, I feel like this idea was among the dumbest Weezer ideas in a long, long time. Phil mostly nails it: too much $$, attached/centered around arguably their least successful project in several years and before it’s fully released, too much ambiguity around the rest of the setlists.

The other sad part of it all is I feel like there is a way Weezer could do a 5 night NYC residency (or like, probably 4 or 5 different cities) and it be both fucking awesome and sell out relatively easily. It’ll be too bad if they take the wrong learning from this.

The rarities sets that fans in his discord had picked for each night was wild. So unbelievable, I almost believe he let them do it knowing it was likely to be cancelled and they wouldn’t have to play said songs lol.

i'm inclined to cut the band some slack here. god forbid a band try and achieve one of their professional and artistic dreams. it's not like they're stoked it didn't work. there's no reason to kick them when they're down in other words.

weezer on broadway? Reasonable. Weezer on broadway playing eps they’re still working on a month before the shows with an acted narrative in between songs? I may quibble with this statement lol
