That's true, I don't know it too well & already casted my vote with my heart, but that's the good thing I'll have something to pay a closer look to!

 

I feel like Graceland would have a tough time if it came out today, actually. There are some thorny conversations about that album and cultural appropriation as is.

 

For sure! There was a time when I probably would’ve voted for Goodness… and that time was before I ever heard Graceland! Honestly jealous of anyone who gets to closely listen to it for the first time.

 

Graceland is a great record but I have connected with maybe three albums the way I connect with goodness. I don’t think it’s a shocker that probably the most acclaimed emo band of the past twenty years is doing this well lol

 

I’ve always viewed (and I still view) the album as collaborative rather than appropriative, but yeah, you’re unfortunately right that the discourse would probably be even more critical in 2022.

 

I'm inclined to agree with you! And I think there's been some pretty nuanced writing on the album that makes that distinction. But conversations around these things are...rarely nuanced.

 

This one is painful. Love Hotelier but Graceland is an all-timer.

 

Not that I pay super close attention to anything on this site but I had no idea The Hotelier was as beloved on this site / in the “emo world” or whatever until this thread. I’d heard their name from time to time but never noticed they had a diehard fan based or a die hard record or two

 

Or they just connect to Goodness more. Haven’t we had enough discussions about assuming a person’s musical ignorance based off of what they vote for? Graceland doesn’t click, I don’t think it’s an all timer. Goodness, on the other hand, does

 

An assumption but I don't think it's that outrageous to assume more people on this site have listened to Goodness than they have Graceland In general, this forum attracts way more emo listeners than fans of Paul Simon or really anything from the 80's

 

Only bad thing I will say about Graceland is s&g have 3 better records and paul s/t is better too

 

and all 5 are better than goodness

 

Paul has so many good albums

Goodness isn't quite on the same level as Home for me but it's still one of my favourite albums of the past ten years. I like Graceland a fair bit but it's never really connected with me much on an emotional level. Easy pick.
