Starting to genuinely feel like out of all the feats Nathan is able to pull, his greatest is continuously avoiding to blow up his experiments by challenging the subjects too much when they bring up stuff like the satanic halloween/google or anti-Semitic comments. Incredible restraint

Just remembered the grandpa saying “fuck me to tears” when they found the gold. Gonna start using that.

I know bullying is bad and all but i think it's okay to cyberbully any dork who wines and makes a twitter thread about Nathan being "cruel"

I don’t think being overly concerned about cruelty and exploitation is a terrible thing and I think the discussion is fine and good to have.

I usually like Richard Brody’s writing but I disagree with his conclusion. Nathan for You in many ways and The Rehearsal in even more are literally about manipulation, in this third episode Nathan is watching a kid’s show about lying with one of the fake kids. It’s very aware of what it is and how it’s using people and the complicated ethics of that. I’m very curious about where it’ll end up, Brody I think said he’s seen the whole season.

The critics aren't entirely wrong. They tricked a guy into spending a night searching for gold with an old man, helping him clean himself, and then told him the old man died and the promised gold wasn't coming.

I mean yeah but it also seemed like it genuinely helped that guy process everything with his brother.

It can be both. It is manipulative (all reality shows are) but can also lead to great moments of truth and emotional nakedness. You have to be at least a little.manipulative to get past peoples' natural guard.

I also hesitate to point to the outcome of the show as proof of anything. We’re seeing Nathan’s version of everything. I do love the show btw and it’s brilliant I just also think it’s a fair discussion. Although it’s a discussion I wish was more pointed at the many more obviously exploitive and harmful reality shows right now.

Why didn't he take the sticker off of the bell pepper instead of just shifting it out of view

Ok I just watched it and holy shit lol. This show is one of a kind. The only thing I’ll add to the manipulative convo is that even you think that helped him process things with his brother there are way healthier ways to do that. Considering he ghosted the process I don’t think any claims can be made on that either way

Being tricked by Nathan is definitely not going to help tamper down that guy’s thoughts about Jewish people

Newest episode is so good. It was actually moving to watch Patrick break down and cry about his brother and moving on from their grandfather’s death. Loving this show!

    pure on main

in the closing monologue nathan talked about how envious he was of others (angela, patrick, etc.) for being able to immerse themselves in a world with such little effort, and how there is only so much you can do to deceive yourself

the sticker breaks the immersion of the rehearsal for the "nathan" character as he is not able to deceive himself while it is visible. therefore shifting it out view is symbolic; he conceals it in the hope that he can forget about it and continue immersing himself

removing the sticker would not have the same effect. he is purposefully trying to trick himself into believing in the fantasy, even though he knows it isn't real
