Damn Dom why aren't you more thankful that the rate of black people murdered in the streets by the state is as low as it is?

  3. In 8 years, when Trump is running as a Democrat against a self proclaimed nazi, I wonder who we'll have to vote for to protect minorities

John Oliver's audience is literally only people who already agree with him, he is not moving the needle an inch

  5. The idea that "it's already bad, but Trump will make it so much worse" is true and fine but like so much liberal discourse pushes the conversation away from their own politicians' responsibility for "it" (indiscriminate murder of minorities by police) and allows them to fear monger republicans and then pat themselves on the back when they lose. That's nice, but people are still being murdered in the street. This is where political realism gets me. Well, Hillary Clinton is the best candidate we got, and she might not do much to end state sanctioned murder, but hey, she won't make it worse. It's just not *time* in the *political culture* of the US to reduce the number of people killed in the streets. Sucks but #realism baby.

All I know is when Trump runs as a Democrat, he will have David's unwavering support.

Agreed that he doesn't change many people's minds, but I think he raises a lot of topics that people otherwise would not know or care about - the debt-buying system, subprime loans, etc.

That said, I think his cultural influence is a bit overstated (as it is with pretty much any late night host) and I laugh every time I see a tweet like this

Yeah I mean I like Oliver, he's funny. But he has traction the same way Hamilton has a public audience - I.e. Liberal media writers love him but he isn't exactly a Kronkite level cultural force.

Even though I have been caught using it from time to time, I am getting tired of the "make [blank] great again" meme.

That not what i said though. Creating a strawman and saying that by my saying, "if we elect Trump things will unquestionably get worse than they are" I'm actually saying, "Let's vote for the person who won't actually do anything to fix it, but also won't make it worse."

That's not what I'm saying at all and I'm getting sick and tired of people deliberately twisting other people's words in here.

Im to the point where I just want to check out of the discourse entirely because it's just unhealthy to be a part of. And that's a significant issue to me.

Discussion topic: should American citizens have the expectation that their president have a well-calibrated and virtuous moral compass, or are we better served by someone who's moral compass is flexible? Meaning, does our president need to be morally comfortable with doing bad things to innocent people?

I didn't think Owen Smith could be anymore pathetic but he keeps surprising me, now he's thanking Corbyn's ex-wife for voting for him

What you said was: "Just because something is already bad (it is) doesn't mean that thing can't become worse (it will)"

How could you accuse someone else of creating a strawman? If you meant something else you could just explain.

do you think hillary will make the epidemic of state murder better or will it stay the same?

“They are not just gangs of kids anymore. They are often the kinds of kids that are called ‘superpredators.’ No conscience, no empathy. We can talk about why they ended up that way, but first we have to bring them to heel.”

I'm going to guess the person who said this isn't going to be very helpful.

lol holy shit. Go to bed and wake up to a bunch of strawmen being built.

No one ever said violence against people of color by state employees is 100% "contingent on electoral politics". Just pointed out that a Trump president almost undoubtedly makes the problem worse.

No one said anyone should be "thankful" that the murder rate "is as low as it is". That poster can go eat worms.

No one said that because Trump would make the problem worse that we shouldn't be holding Democratic politicians who aren't attempting to solve the problem responsible. No one made an argument about "political realism" either. If anything, political realism dictates that now is a great time to try and do something if possible because of how much the issue is on the front page and how much support the issue is gaining.

And @jawstheme is still leaning on quotes from 20 years ago instead of paying attention to the policies being proposed by someone today. And completely ignoring that said someone is notorious for abandoning whatever her own personal beliefs may be in the name of satiating the base she needs to hold office and stay in power. Guess what her base wants this time around as it pertains to law enforcement?

That being said, there really is not much the FedGov can do about local policing, and that's been established in this thread before. Utilizing the DOJ to investigate police shootings is probably near the top of the list of things they can do after the fact, but preventing them from happening? My guess is you may get legislation that focuses on providing fed funds for police to undergo racial sensitivity training and other types of training that has been proven to counteract implicit bias, and yes I believe 100% that Clinton would sign such legislation. But for the most part, the FedGov isn't really the best vehicle for local law enforcement reform.

For fucks sake, no one in this conversation even brought up voting for Hillary goddamn Clinton. It was simply stated, by me, that a President Trump makes the problem much worse, and not just from a police standpoint but from a private citizen committed hate crime standpoint especially. But please smugly tell Muslim Americans and Latino Americans how you stuck to your principles to help them out by stopping Clinton when it came time to vote. (See, I can strawman too) (the lack of eyeroll smiley is killing me)

it's hard to think your position is anything other than that based on the way you talk about it.
