Looks like they've pretty much been playing 23 on a nightly basis so far this year, which is going to CRUSH me when they don't play it in Cleveland on Sept. 8.

Raced my first mile on the track since high school tonight and knew it was going to go well when they gave me that bib number. 4:41.83. Thanks JEW.

The stage setting looked so much better, and you had TGUK over there as well, which we didn't in Poland ;( but the setlist was almost the same, besides Goodbye Sky Harbor, wow, I'd love to hear that live! And I got the chance to talk to Tom and Jim after the show, they stayed with people for like an hour.

I feel like a lot of bands arrive at this conclusion at some point in their careers, and I absolutely get it from a financial standpoint, a creative standpoint, etc.

    But I absolutely hate it.

Can't blame em after the Surviving touring cycle was essentially wiped out by covid

I've said before that there's no way for a band to lose my interest more quickly than saying "We're just going to release singles from now on." If Jimmy Eat World keeps making songs as good as "Something Loud," we'll see. But yeah, extraordinarily bummed about that statement. The last two albums don't necessarily have a ton of my favorite JEW songs, but they're both cohesive thematic statements that I found incredibly moving when taken as a whole. I think if we'd just gotten those songs piecemeal, they wouldn't mean as much to me.

RIP 3 year album cycle 2001-2019

I guess it was wishful thinking to expect an album this fall. I do hope once they feel it's time they come back towards albums.

We’ll see. Probably not getting an album this year but I feel like 99% of bands that say that they’re going to stop making albums and put out singles end up going back to albums sooner than later

I would have thought they would self release an album and see how it performs before ditching albums. Hell they could hire The Maine and there team to show them the ropes of what to do.

I imagine JEW sells a decent amount of vinyl

Yeeeahhh, I don't like the sound of any of that. That's a huge bummer.

I didn't think that first statement was quite as definitive as people seemed to be taking it, but along with that other one it sure sounds like they're not interested in putting out albums anymore.

“Hey I have a fun idea for a song. Should we record it quick and release it in a month?”

  15. or they could be playing coy about further new material coming down the line tbf

    And now delusion sets in.

"They're not really going to do it, that album will be coming any day now." (sits and waits patiently)

If they still recorded new songs and released them semi-regularly then it could be a neat idea - but I feel like other bands / artists that have said similar things release a couple songs then forget about the whole thing, or just go back to making albums again. Or break up haha.

Love him and them, but it’s funny reading this since they’ve played The Middle and Sweetness EVERY TIME I’ve seen them for 21 years.

Here's the problem with that thinking, in my opinion.

When a band does a normal single-album cycle, a new single is the promise of an upcoming album, so you have something you can expect.

When a band chooses to just do single songs, they can put out music at any time, which could mean it comes out more often... but it could just as easily come out less often. You could get only four songs a year. Or nothing.

I get it, any music is good. But if I'm being asked, I prefer to get an album. Like a supply drop. One day you just get 10-14 morsels to chew on, instead of waiting an indeterminate length of time for the next single. And frankly, I prefer to listen to albums anyway. I rarely ever listen to single songs.

I'd rather personally wait for an album, no matter how long it takes. I have other bands I can listen to in the meantime.

    Just my thoughts!

Just don’t get why people project their issues with how they consume music onto artists and expect them to follow suit.

I’m glad you have other bands who will release the albums you want though. I encourage you to indulge in them. There’s too much good music in the world for anyone to have a problem with how bands and artists release it.

Jim mentioned how he finds it hard to expect an hour of time from someone to listen to an album. Which is fair a lot of people won't sit through an entire album of a band they don't know about.

But they will listen to a single.

And that's what albums get for promotion. You check out the single and then if you like it you look into more.

Anthony (Bayside) had similar things to say about their recent single and I just don't understand it because it's not album OR singles. You can put every song some an album out as a single if you are just looking for playlist attention or appealing to the short attention spans infinite content has given us.

Though if the band (be it Bayside or JEW) just needs more time before they feel that have a good idea for new music that makes sense. Being able to focus a tour around a new album and launching new merch in support of an album are important too artists I think. Not like JEW is gonna see any significant money from "Something Loud" nor is there gonna be a 7" single released for it.

I guess what I would understand more is them just saying we need more time for the next album but we still wanted to give fans something new to check out rather than something that sounds more cynical like "what's the purpose of an album in current year"

I don't expect anything. I'm offering my opinion on the situation, and I think it's a valid opinion to have. I'm not really sure why you're positioning yourself as the band's defender, especially since they're not being attacked. If you're okay with a single-based approach, that's cool, you do you.
