The potential revolt against them doing it would have been MORE likely to result in societal collapse than if no one tried to stop them tbh. If no one did anything to stop them, then most peoples general lives would have kept on going as they were before (ie waking up, going to work, coming home, etc). It’s the erosion of civil rights over time that would have happened if the coup was successful and unopposed, not full on anarchy and economic collapse and etc.

you could make the argument that type of govt could lead America into a war that ends up crushing the country ala fascist Italy or Germany, or the end of the American Experiment could destabilize the idea of the dollar as the global currency which would have more long term impacts and potentially result in a collapse when we’re all trying to retire, but that’s a bit if a different discussion imo.

 

Did they solve more murders or just pin them on whoever they wanted with less ability for those stories to gain traction?

It would not have been "over time" it would have been immediate. You succeed in a coup, are you just gonna sit there and use the democratic process? No, you're gonna go full fascist! And this Supreme Court would've been like "Dictators gonna dictate."

You'd have the immediate removal of civil rights. The effective dismantling of the entire executive branch of the US government and the regulatory agencies. Widespread collapse of financial markets, not just in the US, even more COVID deaths, even more out-of-control inflation. Sorry man but shit would have gone off the fucking rails in a hurry.

And I don't think there's any real (modern) precedent for arguably the preeminent global power falling into fascism.
